“Alison Smith, please
stand.”I hear the judge call out my
mother’s name.Why is this happening
to me?Is it my fault that Mom and Dad
are getting a divorce?I sure hope not. These thoughts have been going through my
head since the day Mom and Dad announced that they were getting the
divorce.“Thank you Mrs. Smith.Kaitlin Smith please come forward to the
stand,” the judge calls out.“Please
raise you right hand and place your left hand on the Bible. Now, do you swear to tell the truth and
nothing but the truth?”
“Yes sir,” I reply in a shaky voice.Sweat is dripping off of my forehead.Mom had said that I probably wouldn’t have
to be called to the stand and neither was my older brother Matt.I guess I should have known that I would
have to talk since he ended up being called to the stands just moments before
now.
“Um,
Kaitlin are you listening? Can you tell
us everything you know about your parents divorce and their reasons for
it?”The judge was calling out.I turn to look at my parents who are sitting
on opposite sides of the room with their lawyers at their sides.I get to see their supportive faces but I
also see a room full of people just staring at me.I feel like I am about to barf when the stage fright hits me in
the gut.“Kaitlin, are you all
right?”I can hear the judge’s voice in
the background as he interrupted my train of thought.
“Um,
yes sir I’m fine, but would it be alright if I stepped out of the room for a
moment.I need some fresh air.” I rushed
the words out of my mouth in one breath.I really needed to get out of there.I felt like I was about to faint.
“Yes,
you may.I think that that is probably
a good idea.”Thank you Mr. Judge.I hurried out of the room and out of the
corner of my eye I saw Matt follow me.
“Hey
are you okay? You look pretty pale,” he
asked with a concern look on his face as he handed me a bottle of water.
“Yeah,
I’m okay.”I could not believe that
Matt was only a senior in high school. He was always acting more like an adult than some teenager. He put his arms around my shoulders and
leaded me back inside and back to my place before the judge.
“Alright
lets precede,” the judge exclaimed to everyone in the courtroom and nodded
towards me with a look of encouragement on his face.“Now Kaitlin, please tell us everything you known about your
parents reasons for their divorce.”
I
started to talk about how my father how always acted a little insane and about
all of the bizarre things that he did.Like when he duck taped Matt to his bed when he was five years old
because he was caught stealing a cookie from the cookie jar and also like when
he would stay out till three in the morning partying with kids who were about
my age and had just started high school. Also, how Mom would put up his immature behavior and how her friend
George Johnson, a police officer, would come over to help take care of Matt and
me.Also, how Mom was always having to
take off from her job as a wedding cake designer to come home to be with Matt
and I.
After
I was done talking, my father was called to the stands and my mother was called
back up and so were a few people that I didn’t recognize.I truly had no idea who would get custody of
Matt and me and what would happen to our parents.
“Alison Smith, please stand.” I hear the judge call out my Mom's name. Why is this happening to me? Is it my fault that Mom and Dad are getting a divorce? I hope not. These thoughts have been going through my head ever since my Mom and Dad announced that they were separating. “Thank you Mrs. Smith. Kaitlin Smith please step forward to the stand,” the judge calls out. “Please raise you right hand and place your other on the Bible. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?”
“I do,” I reply in a shaky voice. Sweat dripping off of my forehead. Mom had said that I probably wouldn’t have to be called to the stand and neither would my older brother Matt. I guess I should have known that I would have to talk since he ended up being called to the stands just moments before.
