The cemetery was crowded full of men and women dressed in black. They crowded around an empty casket and headstone labeled ‘Emily D. Rose.’ The family insisted on burying an empty casket in memory of their adoptive daughter. The family cherished the daughter and her boyfriend’s family was holding their own funeral on the other side of the cemetery.

Both families mourned the loss of their children. Not one of the people there had expected their teenagers to suddenly disappear, but they had been gone for nearly a year. It had sunk in earlier that month that their kids wouldn't walk through their doors and say they had taken a wrong turn and not to worry. Nearly everyone cried at Emily’s funeral. All but one girl cried at Emily’s funeral.

The girl was unnoticed by everyone. To them she was just another family member, but if someone were to ask who she was, they couldn’t say. The girl watched the proceedings with mild interest. Watching the funeral was interesting; she had seen people she knew go up and say nice things about Emily. Even more interesting was most of the time, they meant what was said.

The girl left early and took a cab to the east side of town. She walked to an abandoned storehouse and opened the rusty metal door. Inside, away from the nighttime light, the girl looked at an older man and a boy her age.

The older man had on an old fashioned, black tuxedo and wore a bowler’s hat atop his silver haired head. He had a walking stick in his right hand, his fingers holding the bat shaped wooden handle.

The younger boy was athletic and had hard, dense muscle covering his arms. He wore a simple black tee shirt with a vibrant red ‘V’ on either shoulder. His jeans were a dark and shadowy blue and the knees were both worn to a paler blue.

Both of them looked at her with stone black eyes. She could see red tingeing the edges of the colored irises. The older man asked her, “Why did you go to the funeral?”

“I find a person rarely gets to see her own funeral, so I thought I might as well go, Darius. Sir,” Emily Rose told the elderly man.
