21st Century Vows

21st Century Vows

A Poem by Victorandrew
"

view on marriage today.

"

Dearly beloved, we are gathered today to marry,

This 21st century couple,

May you say your vows?

I, take thee, to be my temporary wedded husband,

To lack and to release from this day forward,

For better, for richer,

In health, to love and to cherish, 'til money runs out,

According to God's unholy ordinance;

Thereto I plight thee my temporary troth.

(Thereto I pledge my lust).

And you sir?

I, take thee, to be my evanescent wedded concubine

To have and to hold from this day forward,

For better, for richer,

In health, to love and to cherish, 'til another woman do us part,

According to God's unholy ordinance;

Thereto I plight thee my wavering troth.

(Thereto I pledge my lust).

Faithfulness has become Latin,

Beckoning bereavement, blindly brushing bright

Futures.

Dead,

You died,

You left the corpse of what used to be,

Leaving sons and daughters questioning,

Where did you go?

Did I do it?

Self-worth tossed into wishing wells,

Holy matrimony turns into consecutive polygamy,

Marriage after marriage after marriage,

Children, confused,

Dad?

Mom?

Who is who?

Sleeping with the woman at the well,

Honey drips from her lips,

The deceit of her tongue,

Its life,

It’s sweet.

You became a monster!

Your teeth sinking into the innocent,

Leaving marks,

Making her jump off cliffs,

To see your blinding white face,

Destitute left homes,

Did you love us?

Why didn’t you stay?

Why did you just forsake everything?

Leaving Mom dangling upon a cross,

Was it not enough?

Her blood, sweat and tears have made you white,

Yet, you still left.

Goodbyes whispered,

Siblings only seen once a week,

With hopeless see you laters,

Moirai, frolicking with inevitable predestinations,

Seeds,

Left spread upon the rocks,

Unstable,

Left to wither,

You forgot to water,

The very thing you gave life to.

Moving back and forth,

Restarting legal separation,

Petitions,

Settlements,

Trials,

Completely tarnished,

Everything what used to be,

While, I sit in bed,

Nocturnes vibrate,

Fantasizing,

Dreaming,

Of what could have been,

This gorgeous merry family,

Yet that doesn’t exist in the 21st century.
