Through the Woods

Through the Woods

A Chapter by Verneé

Angela made her way across the street and continued toward the library.  Her paper was due tomorrow and she hadn't even started it yet.

Looks like I''ll be pulling an all-nighter.

She was cutting through the trees across the street from the campus library when she heard was sounded like a group of people running up behind her.

Probably some friends out for a jog, she thought to herself.

Soon after the thought had left her mind, she became award taht the running had stopped.  She felt a sinking sensation in the pit of her stomach.  She shivered.

"Kinda cold out tonight, huh?"  She jumped, started.  Something told her not to turn around.

She quickened her pace.

"Kinda late for you to be out by yourself ain't it?" another voice asked.

Why hadn't seh finished her paper earlier? she asked herself as fear washed over her.

"Looks like we got ourselves a mute," said the first voice laughing.

"A damned pretty one though," replied his friend.

"Yeah she's a nice piece alright," stated a third voice.

Great, three guys and one girl.  This can't be good.

She thought about running but knew it would be useless.  Can't show them I'm scard.  Maybe if I ignore them long enough they'll get bored and go away.

She heard their steps quicken as they started closing in on her, until one was on either side of her, then the other was standing directly in front of her.

"Excuse me," she murmurmed softly.  But he made no move to get out of her way.  He just stood there looking down at her.

His face was concealed in the shadows of his baseball cap so she couldn't make out his features.  But from the look of him, he was about six feet, two hundred pounds, of which most was probably muscle.

Peering sideways, she noticed his friends were of similar build.

My mom told me not to go anywhere by myself at night.

She took a step back, and they all turned to face her.  She took another step.  They continued to stand there, waiting.  She turned and ran.

She didn't get far.  She hadn't ran a good ten feet before they grabbed her form behind and threw her against a tree.  She opened her mouth to scream, but she mouth was quickly covered with a hand that smelled of alcohol and urine.

"Scream and die."

She didn't need to be told twice.
