Krea's Doing

Krea's Doing

A Chapter by Sigyn

She wrote that exactly three months ago. Two days, and three months ago. That's the day Krea decided they deserved to know. The 'Naries, I mean. She thought the 'Naries were worth it. We all disagreed. None of us have a grudge against the Ordinaries. We just know it's not safe to interact with them. The 'Naries are more dangerous than any of us, even if they are plain and uninteresting. One word to any of them, and you're dead. The witches are on your butt and the only option is to run and not look back. Krea didn't even manage that. She posted the warning in all of the local police stations. The 'Naries thought she was nuts. No one paid her any mind. She ranted in the streets, talking to anyone who would listen. She tried to warn them. A week after this all started, I waited outside the warehouse, like I always did. I was her mentor after all. It was my job. She never came home.

We all knew why. It wasn't like it was a big secret. We knew she was dead. Thing is, we couldn't confirm it, until the Witches broadcasted who that they caught her. They do that every six months, just to keep us all in line. You have to wait in agony for a half a year to see if people you love have been murdered. And sure enough, Krea's name came up when my Alpha arrived at the Summer Solstice Elder's Meeting.

All the dead's things go to their closest friends. I guess I was the closest person to Krea. She had only been a Changer, what? A year? Maybe a year and a half? The point is, I got this journal. This is it. The only thing she ever wrote in it was the warning, so I guessed I should write something in it.

Hello. My name is Elizabeth Parker. I am a Changer. A Mutt, if you must ask. I'm fourteen years of age, and I've been a Mutt for nine of those long years. I've played this game longer than most. After five or so years, people begin to loose it. And that's when Catalyst steps him.

He's leader of the Witches. All the Witches, not just a specific coven. That means he's leader over all of us. He the President of the races. Catalyst-shortened for Cat- is the designator. He is number one in charge, very mucho importante. He's the one, who if you're caught breaking the law, he makes the choice. Life, or death.

Most of the time it's death. Laws are very important to Cat. I met him once. Our Pack Leader had been attacked by a vampire, and he was on his deathbed. I was next in line, so I had to go to Court with the stupid bloodsucker, and Cat was the judge. It wasn't like a Nari' court case. We stood in a circular room, all white in color. I stood ten paces away from the vampire, facing him. He faced me. Cat walked between us, talking. Just talking. He spoke of the cold ground in the winter, and morning dew in the spring. After hours of standing in silence, he proclaimed a treaty between the vampire's pack, and mine. Our hunting ours were during the daylight. Their's, when the sun set. The only exception, was when the moon was full. I had to point that out to Cat, reminding him that no matter the rules, we would always hunt one night a month. That made him scowl, but he agreeded. We Mutts will always be treated like the red-headed step child when it comes to the races.

When I got back, Peter Lucca, my Pack Leader, my Alpha, was dead. I was next in line. But almost immeadiatly, Michael Loring challenged me. The next full moon, we fought. I still have scars marring my face. Loring's the Alpha now, and I'm to keep my mouth shut.

It has been a two years since then. Krea came along, and left. Spring has come around again, and now the ground is unhardening once more. Loring still leads. We hunt during the day, the vampires at night. And when the moon is full, the races are tense.

New York is busy in spring. The Nari's call it 'Break'. Whatever it is, it's coming along. I can feel it. As I sit in this dark alley, I can feel my stomach tighten. Ever since Krea came along, speaking to the humans, all the races have been uneasy. Just last night, Catalyst made an annoucement.

"Humans will die at our hands. Anyone of the Ordinaries that knows of our existence will be sentenced to death. If you do not oblige, you will die with them. The war begins now."

Krea had preditced a war was coming. She knew that we would start killing them. But now she has sealed their fate.

I like it! there is just one grammar thing that really bugs me. there is the sentence, "Our hunting ours were during the daylight". I think you mean Hours, not ours.
Plus, I have this really weird thing with names, and I really like the name Krea. did you make it up? I've never heard it before. Please keep writing, I would love to read more!
