Woes of a Prophet

Woes of a Prophet

A Poem by Verdant Cynic

You look into the sky
And see a divine fire
Darkness unforetold
Will soon cover the world.

Your own heart is laid clear.
Your hidden darkness brought to light.
You see into your own void
And your own tentative demise.

You see this same darkness
Dwelling in the hearts of man
Of how their own ignorance
Will bring their doom.

Hearken!
You cry to warn them.
Yet shrouded by their own mist
They mock you scornfully.

Blinded by their own light
They fail to see their darkness
Of how their ignorance
Will unravel the world.

You have become a lunatic.
Your vision haunted by darkness.
Your calm sea becomes
A raging dark ocean.

The people spoke of prophecy
As a wonderful divine gift
Yet you now grimly realize
That you must bear the burdens
Of a shadow-covered future.

Intriguing look into a mind desperate to reveal truth. This prophet obviously has a gift that he feels is a curse...I think the real issue is the fact that he cares about humanity. Easier to hate the gift than to hate the compassion he has for people. Not that I feel compassion is wrong...just sometimes painful. It's a choice isn't it? Just some thoughts...this piece really made me think. Thanks for sharing your work...looking forward to reading more.
