forgotten

forgotten

A Poem by Ver

bite of steel, clawing, screech for victory

red vision, aching muscles push and pull with lungs heaving

whos to say good from bad, righteous, or deceit

ghosts dance as the perfume of iron spreads

they chant for none, therefore, they are forgotten

as the day is long, so rages this fire between man and woman

set ablaze by children whom think themselves tall and brave

soon the umbilical cord must be severed

another will readily take their place

I ask god of the sweet freedom to choose my destiny

rid myself of this insane cycle

only now I am bereft to find

I too have since long been forgotten

In my family, fragmented by abuse, there are many decades-long estrangements. Your poem harkens to how it can feel when family members are seemingly forgotten by each other. I love your screeching imagery in the first two verses, which is what family life felt like to me (youngest of a big chaotic batch of nine). Your last verse is my life . . . I'm 63, never had kids -- altho I did lots for nieces/nephews -- but still forgotten in the end. Your narrator seems to convey that this situation has been accepted as the price of freedom, which is also how I feel (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
