Part Three: Chapter Nine: Hush, Little Baby

Part Three: Chapter Nine: Hush, Little Baby

A Chapter by VanillaTwilight

I ran and ran and ran. Betrayer. Betrayer. “BETRAYER!” I accidentally screamed it out loud, earning a few glares from passing pedestrians. No, but honestly. I couldn’t believe he had betrayed me like that.
Ahead I saw a bridge and a river. I ran to the bridge and looked over the railing, staring down into the river below. I put my foot up on the railing and took a deep breath.
As I prepared myself to jump, a cloud moved overhead. A ray of light shone through the clouds. I glanced where it illuminated the earth, and saw a woman. Three children danced and played around her. She held a baby in her arms, carefully rocking it. Her song carried to me, a whisper on the wind. “Hush, little baby, don’t say a word...” And as the light shone on that family and her quiet song reached my ears, I realized something.
Maybe there was some good in the world after all.
Maybe right now I couldn’t really see it. But maybe it was there, under all the evil. Maybe you just had to know where to look. And maybe I’d find it someday. Maybe it wouldn’t be today. Maybe it wouldn’t be tomorrow. Maybe it wouldn’t be next week, or next month, or next year. But maybe, someday, I’d find the good in the world.
I put my foot back on the bridge, turned, and walked away, back home.
And as I walked down the street, the light shone around me.
