Standing on the edge....

Standing on the edge....

A Story by Jim

Turning his head, he looks behind him. He sees all those that have come to watch the final step. He turns back and faces forward. Looking down he sees below the black, churning water and craggy rocks. One step is all it would take. One forward or one back. He turns his head around again. They are still waiting, some smiling, some with uncaring faces. Spreading his arms out, fingertips spread wide. He leans forward and plunges down into the darkness. Chest forward, head back, eyes closed. He falls, falls, falls. He feels like a bird, finally free, finally alive. To bad it all could end soon. The water rushes up with loving arms, the rocksides wrap around like fingers grasping. Crashing waves fill his ears. Water explodes around him. He doesn't feel it. He is no longer here, he is somewhere else. Somewhere free...somewhere....
