"Love Had"

"Love Had"

A Poem by Valentine

                  "Love Had"

Life had hoped there would be a day,
Love had chosen...to come its way.
Love had dreamed, of passionate nights,
Wrapped in sweet bliss...holding you tight.

Love had longed...from the days as a child,
To never know hunger, or miss passion gone wild.
Love had wished and waited so long,
For someone to come...and fully belong.

Love had tried and failed at its best.
Drowning in sorrow...lost in life's tests.
Love had cried...and tried to return,
Leave heat inside...where feelings burned.

Love had missed...the mark all along;
Coming up empty... to weak to be strong.

A little too stylised to engage the reader, I think. It's almost impersonal, as if the writer is not really connected to the content. Writing to a formula is one of the pitfalls of love poetry, and in this piece it certainly seems somewhat formulaic. Perhaps it's because it's written in the third person, and this effectively distances the intensity. I don't get the sense that the writer is anywhere involved in this - it's more like an exercise. Sorry, but that's how it takes me.
