"Last Refrain"A Poem by Valentine
"Last Refrain"
In the silence of the night, the eerie echo of a western train.
Bounces off of the canyons walls,singing its last refrain.
All is black...all that is heard,is a deeply keening sound;
The trains lonesome whistle...as down the rails it is bound.
In the valley...on a bed...one heart hears...loves last call.
Resounding off of the hallway...repeating itself, off the walls.
All is dark, the only noise...a deep...sad, keening cry.
Loves last...lonesome wail,the voice of loves...goodbye.
Canyon walls echoing...the last sounds they heard.
One a lonesome whistle...the other...goodbyes...last word.
For a time, all is black, in the silence, one last voice.
The lonesome sound of farewell...loves... final choice.
Western bound on that train,is heard the whistles wail;
Teardrops fall and hit the seat...agony of a love....that failed.
On toward the western sky,goes the...outbound train.
Carrying with it one bitter half of...loves last refrain.
Finally in the cool dark night the last train whistles call;
One huddled on the outbound train... one to the bedroom wall.
