Love's Flame

Love's Flame

A Poem by Valentine
"

Very old write.

"
           "Love's Flame"

Drawn nearer to you, like a moth to a flame;
Then comes the heat, over and over again.
In ecstasy...eyes wide open, wings fluttering,
Not feeling the fire, not the scars widening.

Burning up in flames too hot to the touch;
Destroying myself, yet I crave you so much.
Like a thirsty man...really needing a drink,
I need your sweet fire, to carry me over the brink.

Love burning so warm, too hot to ever die out;
Carrying me places I will forever see...no doubt.
Now I see another, being drawn to your fire,
Consuming your heat...luring you to go higher.

How could I know...our flame could slowly die;
Spoiling every chance this moth had ever again fly?
Flying into the flames...now forever to burn;
Not having the will to go on nor ever to learn.

Slowly I see her...drawn into your blazing heat;
Love words whispered, again... promises so sweet.
Knowing that one day, she... will burn up too,
As soon as you draw, another fool close to you.

Once burnt...love...is never the same,
How can one learn, to trust, ever again?
For after a while...old flames will slowly die;
And the fire cools, in the bed where you lie.

Never to trust, or fly into another's flame;
Heart so broken...you die of the shame.

I feel I have read the first half of this before, from another user; the "moth to a fire subject" is used quite often. Which makes sense about the overlap (I'm sure many writers have used it before your time, too.)

But I liked the direction you took it in after the fact: A demolisher of love. A heart-breaker. A seducer. And then coming to a sad conclusion of one feeling vulnerable to ever love again.

Fire can symbolize destruction, the entire piece so fitting to its essence.

Lovely read, Ms. Valentine.

I could almost hear the "pzzzzzzzztt" of her wings being scorched on the raw flames that once warmed her and the very same flame which drew her in.
A tragic tale of love found but misunderstood to be the real thing - instead it was toxic and deadly.
Your rhyming is impeccable Valentine.
