"Just Silence"

"Just Silence"

A Poem by Valentine

          "Just Silence"

Before I could take the time to say
What was in my heart that day;
I stood still---and could not impart
To you the words that filled my heart.

You stopped and talked awhile;
I wonder if...I took the time to smile?
Your eyes spoke so many silent words;
I could not say"my heart has heard."

Every silent thing you tried to express
My mind so full of emptiness.
My heart so full...I could not speak;
Or lay my palm against your cheek.

I wanted to say "I love you,"
To ask you if you " loved me too?"
But...I stood there in silentness,
Afraid to speak, my tongue did rest.

Silence! I could not say the words,
That me own mind had often heard.
Afraid to say how I have yearned,
Fear that my feelings you would spurn.

Both too shy, we turned and walked away,
Forever to wonder "what we did not say?'

Sometimes the things we don't say haunt us more than the things we did say

Dani, some of us open our mouths and put our own foot into it! Kathie
Shyness, the curse of love. Too shy to speak out. Too shy to believe anyone could love us, too shy to make the attempt and take a chance. Good write, Kathie

Sometimes shyness stops us from saying what we can write without restraint. We "taciturn" males may not be able to vocalise our feelings, but it doesn't lessen them. That's why we write poetry..:-)

There- Your sensitive poem has made me realise how weak we males really are.

Norman.

Not just males, many females too. Kathie
This poem is so accurately depicted. The fourth stanza takes me back to a time when I should have told another how I really felt and the what ifs that arose from it. I like the fact that you include body language as well and how much can be expressed even without words.

If you collected the words left unspoken by people, you could craft a novel's worth of pages. Thank you for sharing Valentine.

You are more than welcome. Kathie
I like this. At one point in my life this would have been me. I was shy to the point of never expressing myself. Lovely writing!

This is more common with the young, us oldsters tend to say what we think, even when it gets us into.. read more
