How to Be a Great First-Generation College Student

If high-school seemed tough, imagine college. Although attending university can sound scary, it will bring you numerous advantages in the long-term. Being a first-generation college student takes a lot of courage and determination, so I want to congratulate you on that. But remember: courage is not enough. You need intelligence, hard-work, and commitment in order to succeed.

So, let’s see how you can survive your freshman year by keeping up with your school work while also having a social life.

1.Choose the Right Major for You

First-generation college students can be easily intimidated by their families. Your parents might want you to become a doctor, an attorney, or a professional athlete. No matter their preferences, you must do whatever you like. Choosing a major that does not fit you will make your life a misery.

Doing what you love might seem something for the privileged, but remember: if you really love something, you make the best out of it. Success comes with fulfillment and happiness, not with frustration and endless work hours!

2.Admit That You Are On A Budget

While your wealthy friends might party all day and night, drive expensive cars and eat out, you must admit that you are broke. No worries! I was a broke college student as well. So what? I survived. There is no better life lesson than being broke in college, with no family or friends nearby. You learn how life actually works, and make the best out of what you have.

Living a minimalist life has never felt better. Let them spend money on useless things while you spend time upgrading your wisdom!

3.Work Hard

College is a privilege. So, don’t sling mud at your parents by dropping out. Work hard to achieve your goals and keep yourself motivated by any means. Have problems studying alone? Study with a group of friends. Have problems focusing on your work? Get rid of any distractions, such as social media or TV shows.

Working hard will bring you nothing other than good grades in the short-term, which can be disappointing. But remember! Good things come for those who wait, so keep working towards your bigger goals until you reach them! That’s where you’ll find true fulfillment.

4. Relax

Work hard, play hard, relax hard. Without breaks, there is no progress. Take your time to relax from time to time. Play a sport, or hang out with your friends. After a 6h intense session of hard work, call a friend and go dance! Enjoy your life and don’t forget that even if you are a college student, you can still do things for yourself.

5. Ask Questions

Least but not last, ask lots of questions! College is a new world for you, so asking questions is a natural habit for freshmen (and not only). Don’t be afraid to speak out " both in class and in other extra-curricular activities " and let yourself be heard. There is no such thing as a wrong question, so don’t worry about sounding stupid. That is something people-pleasers would think, and you are not one of them.
