Slap my Sassafras

Slap my Sassafras

A Poem by Dripping Chocolate Madness
"

Going back to chocolate... Trees are scarier than I thought they'd be.

"
I've always been a tree!
Spices from my leaves...
Roots for making tea...

But flavors from nature can be followed by danger if you are a stranger to trees.

Drinking the sap straight from the tap can certainly lead to disease.

Mushroom and clover can both hold you over and steal back control from your feet

The orangest lichen causes blood sugar to spike, and then... Where, oh where would you be?

The birds on my branches have taken their stances, and they know what dances you like.  The kiting and trailing, forever impaling their victims upon wooden spikes. You've seen the Jays, with their terrible ways, and you've seen large Hawks, and the like... But there is no bird that you've ever heard of who's violence compares to the Shrike.

Trees bearing fruit
Require one who's astute
To pick through the ripest of them
But once on the ground
If you choke them down
You'll possibly come to your end

Yes, I am a tree!
My leaves lobed in 3.
Sassafras. That is my name.
And Filé, the spice of deep southern life
And Root Beer, if it's all the same.

This is orbital originality, which has quickly come to define your fine reputation at the cafe! I am seriously jealous of your raucous rhyme & rhythm, kinda haphazard but still slapping time with bowing branches, and totally blowing us all away, as many of us at the cafe have been on this "I am a tree" binge, but you might've won the prize. I never enter contests, but we should've had a "I am a tree" contest becuz I would've declared "you win!" I love how your uninhibited whimsy treats all the senses with so many ways to feel & appreciate & commune with your tree-ness. I've got to up my game, to keep up with your treely wheely! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Abundant here... we cleared an acre and flavored the air with bulldozed root beer root, wrenched and wrung from the ground. Loved the poem.

I fear the FDA might have a thing or two to say on this skipping, rhyming, fun write with a warning attached.
