WelcomeA Chapter by MeggyThe start of it all.The palace halls were a buzz for the kings twenty-first birthday which was just days away and yet their king showed no joy in the occasion. Basil Pierce the king of this land knew his twenty-first birthday was equivalent to a death sentence. All kings must be married by their twenty-first birthdays or at least have a female to share their bed at night and he had neither of these things. It wasn’t like the maidens in his kingdom did not thrill him but he felt something was missing with everyone he took to his bed and now with his birthday around the corner he either had to settle on one of his lack luster maidens as a bride or a bed mate neither option seemed good. Perhaps his trusted adviser James could offer him some bit of good news that did not revolve around the day of his birth. Reaching for the braided cord Basil pulled it letting the ring from the bell attached to it resonate through the palace halls until his adviser James scurried into the room. James was no bigger then a minute in both height and width ways. His eyes were a vibrant green and seemed to always hold the desire to please whether it was for Basil or any young maiden who thought he was darling for his stature. His ears were rather big outside the proportion of the rest of him but so was his tail both a light orange coloring he was found as a very cute male among the fox society but unlike Basil he did not have to be tied down. Bowing low James greeted his long time friend and ruler before straightening. “You rang sir?” Basil nodded as his hand went up to his face to shield his eyes from view. “My dearest friend and trusted adviser please give me some pleasing information that does not relate to my up coming birthday I beg of you.” James suppressed his surprise of his master’s request for anything non-related to his birthday but as his follower he had to obey it. “Well…uh...sir… there seems to be a pack of wolves at the front gate asking for safe passage through our land they are willing to trade safe passage for one of their queen’s handmaids. What should we do sir?” Basil’s white ears perked up at this new piece of information before sitting up straight in his thrown from the slouch his body had taken. “What else is there to do I would like not to start a war with the wolves accept their trade and grant them safe passage through our streets.” James nodded and bowed low again before his king before straightening and scurrying to the door like the devil was on his heels. Basil called to him just moment before he was completely out the door. “And, bring the handmaiden to the main chamber I wish to see if the trade was worth it.” James nodded again and scurried off. Basil could not help but feel the smile playing across his lips as he stood from his throne and moved to one of the wall mirrors. He studied his appearance in the reflection of the mirror. He was not a bad looking king far from it really his frame standing at about 6’3” he was well built thanks to his workout and his fathers good genes though he had his mothers bright blue eyes and black hair though the royal clothing seemed to never fit his build just right like it had on his father he would learn to wear them properly but right now he had to meet the woman he had got for his pass of safety and he could hear the fight from down the hall. Why did the wolves have to be so stubborn by the sounds of growls and snapping this one did not come willingly but she would learn to accept her fate and learn to serve him and whatever female he decided on. Turning to the door Basil waited as the red oak doors opened and two of his men brought in the struggling female with James at their backside. The female would not bow properly to him so the guards forced her to her knees. Basil could not help but think of the foolish pride the wolf before him had. Did she not know her place? He sneered at her until she looked up at his face through her hair and his whole world changed from the moment on and he knew it.
