Where the Altitude Rises

Where the Altitude Rises

A Poem by Matt Mutiva

Where the altitude rises

Is Kenya

The main source of

the world’s most spectacular,

beautiful, human population broken

down into subgroups separated

by thin, white bands

Archaeologists in Kenya

Migrated to the northwest region of Ethiopia

Around 2000 B.C.E.

European explorers stumbled upon

Mount Kilimanjaro

And began to take natural resources

Britan gradually divided the African continent

The British brought thousands of British

A Kikuyu, named Harry Thuku

Encouraged rebellion on his home soil

His rallying cry uhur,

Swahili for freedom

His slogan harambee,

Meaning “Let’s all pull together”

Each take a piece of ugali

Houses were made from sticks,

Cement blocks, and tin roofs

Churches on top of Mount Kenya,

Had the power to communicate with the spirit world

The performers die, carrying spears and shields

Their bodies blue.

The music, Polyrhythmic
