Letter to Great Grandma

Letter to Great Grandma

A Poem by Ursula Kay Vos

         Grandma,

Did you ever know that you saved me

Every time you came to visit

Every Smile you showed

Every call you called

And every time that little bird told you something,

Im still convinced

You were just wise,

And you just loved me

Too much to embarass me

So you would say that birdie said

I was going to have a birthday

You knew I never liked celebrating

But for you I would

I'm trying hard Grandma,

trying to be strong

trying to trust

everything you taught me by your actions

I am learning why

why you didnt lecture me

you knew I wouldnt listen to another

another story about why

why I should be greatful

greatful for what

you knew what I didnt want to show

You see I met your little birdie

Grandma I met God

but I only realized recently

that He was your birdie

and that you were so patient

because your little birdie

told you what I

what I hid

Im sorry I lied

I lied and said I fell

You knew i didnt fall

I didnt fall every time

every time you saw me

But that was how you saved me

Because in my storm

my storm of childhood

you always gave me a refuge

a refuge of love and peace

No one yelled or even talked loud

we did the same thing every time

we had the same routine

and even though

I only saw you

once or twice

every few years

or when dad went to jail

or that time he wanted to go to europe

i knew when i was at your house

everything was the same

and the last time I saw you

the bible you gave me that I hid

when I was 12,

It was still where I hid it.

I remeber when you gave it to me

You told me it had been in our family

for a long long time,

It was your Mothers.

I still have it

And I will always have you.

Thank you Grandma,

You really were my Great Grandma!

I miss you, but you know

I saw a picture of you that you never had out

It was by your picture with Grandpa at the service,

Pastors wife thought it was me,

I dodged a bullet there, I could have looked like my Dad!

It was weird not calling you and bringing you a cake this year

I love you

And Grandma, make sure the Angels get that Angel food cake recipe right?  You always can cook it better than anyone else I know, so Happy Birthday.  I do hope you had a really great Angel food cake with Papa and some fresh butter milk.

Love,

UKV
