Masquerade

Masquerade

A Poem by SilentAuthor

The golden room is full of people
Dressed in their finest wear
Such elegant gowns and perfect suits
You can't help but stop and stare

The candelabras are fully lit
String quartet floats music through the air
The sound of carriages pulled by horses
Can be heard from down the stairs

Every guest is in masquerade
Identity hidden behind their mask
Such beautiful pieces made of rhinestones and jewels
Memories of this night will forever last

I am standing to one side of the room
Leaning against the gold-leaf wall
Graciously declining offers to dance
Watching new guests enter the hall

I see you enter the crowded room
Dressed in the finest silk and satin
Your gown is flowing onto the floor
It seems you are the main attraction

Your hair cascades down your back
You have a soft smile upon your lips
You enter the room with your escort in arm
I can see the fire in your eyes is not lit

Your partner leaves you to stand alone
While he makes himself known to other guests
How dare he leave such beauty alone
To stand there in awkward distress

I leave my post from against the wall
But keep my eyes on you
I make my way to the balcony ledge
You're here, I can't believe this to be true

From across the room your eyes meet mine
And you give a smile just for me
I turn and walk down the stairs
And wait expectantly

You make your way to the balcony
And stand where you saw me stand
You pick up the rose I left for you
You look down to scout the land

Rose in hand, you walk down the stairs
And follow the petals that I left
You follow the trail into the garden maze
You walk slowly, not knowing what to expect

The center of the maze you arrive at
The only light is the glow of the moon
Hardly a sound surrounds you
The events of the ball will start soon

I can see you look into the dark
Trying to find where I have gone
I watch you in your diamond mask
And your gown shining like the dawn

I stand behind you and touch your hand
And I feel you jump so slightly
You entwine your fingers into mine
And grasp my hand so tightly

I lean in and kiss your neck
And feel your earring on my mask
My other hand I put around your waist
This moment I want to last

You turn around to face me
And I kiss those delicate lips
I gently remove your diamond mask
In your memory I want to stick

Your eyes are so bright and beautiful
So deep and full of soul
How I want to be with you
Let me become your true love's role

You take your hands away from mine
And start to remove my mask
In the distance your name is called
Our moment ruined by a question asked

You kiss me quickly and turn to leave
And I try to pull you back
You rush out of my grasp and out of view
I run after you to try and keep track

By the time I reach the maze entrance
You are standing at the stairs
In the grasp of your escorts arms
He not your true partner- it's not fair

I see you turn to me for one last glance
Before you walk away
I don't want this to end
In my life I want you to stay

I glance down to see in my hands
Your beautiful diamond mask
I grasp it tightly and want you to know
Seeing me- this won't be the last
