Invincible Cloaks

Invincible Cloaks

A Poem by Tigran Avoundjian

It seems we cannot hang on
To the innocence of childhood fantasy -
Invincible cloaks and candy coated dreams
Of living forever under a lemon drop sun.
Although spring may ring with a child's playful laugh,
Calling for the banishment of winter's icy glare,
Even the invulnerability of adolescent summers
Lose their leaves to the autumns of adulthood.

Yet while vibrant yellow flowers can still blossom
In modern day wastelands of weeds and dirt,
And the sidewalks remain stamped
With the tiny footprints of a baby's first steps,
The children will keep their invincible cloaks
Silencing the cat calls of death,
In favor of jelly bean dreams
And rainbow sherbet smiles of immortality.
