Bathing CodaA Poem by UnendingOceansI'm twisting the conventional meaning of CODA (Children Of Deaf Adults) here, and in doing so I mean no disrespect to anyone who identifies as such.Bathing Coda Raised to be my father to see the other point of view: mother may I choose the other side? Raised not to bother beyond the valley where they slept, one early morning I woke and told myself. They ought to know the secrets and meaning of something beyond pain relief. They should’ve seen what was going on before I came along and learned to swim in it. never did warn me, never did warn me, never did warn us all. I walked, I ran, I saw my reflection in the river that ran beside me. I danced and I sang when finally I stopped to catch my breath by the river that roiled. I looked and listened, knowing somehow that the fish that swam in the river were running… I watched time and place dissolve behind the fish as they whisked themselves away. never did warn me, never did warn me, never did warn us all. As we choke, send for escape! Make it seem like we’ve been painters with the steadiest of hands. © 2012 UnendingOceans |
