Will it just be the two of us? (The Bell rings) Elizabeth: (Coming forward) What’s her problem, anyway? I didn’t even say anything, yet she looks at me as if it’s my fault. Why does Alex even like her? She doesn’t love him the way I do; I can just imagine what’s going to happen tonight… (Music: You Belong With Me) Elizabeth: You’ll be on the phone with your girlfriend; she’s upset She’s goin’ off about something that you said But she doesn’t get your humor like I do I’m in my room, it’s a typical Tuesday night I’m listening to the kind of music she doesn’t like But she’ll never know your story like I do She wears short skirts, I wear T-Shirts She’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find That what you’re looking for has been here the whole time If you could see that I’m the one who understands you Been here all along so why can’t you see, you belong with me? You belong with me We’d be walking the streets, with you in your worn-out jeans I can’t help thinking this is how it ought to be Laughing on a park bench thinking to myself Hey isn’t this easy? And you’ll have a smile that could light up this whole town I haven’t seen it in a while, ‘cause she brought you down One day you’ll find I know you better than that Hey, whatcha doing with a girl like that? She’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find That what you’re looking for has been here the whole time Can’t you see that I’m the one who understands you Been here all along, so why can’t you see you belong with me? You belong with me I can see it, You’re driving to my house in the middle of the night I’ll be the one who makes you laugh when you know you’re about to cry I know your favorite songs, and you’ll tell me about your dreams And I know where you belong, I know it’s with me Can’t you see that I’m the one who understands you Been here all along, so why can’t you see you belong with me? Standing by, waiting at your back door, All this time, how could you not know, baby, you belong with me? You belong with me You belong with me! You belong with me (End Music) (Bell rings again, Elizabeth runs off as the curtain rises to reveal a school classroom, Alex and Cassandra are in their seats, Elizabeth runs in through the door in upstage-right) Mr. Mayer: Now class, we’re going to be starting our functions unit today and- (Sees that Elizabeth is late) Ms. Fall, you’re late. What do you have to say for yourself? Elizabeth: (nervously) I-I lost track of the time? Mr. Mayer: Well, don’t let it happen again. Oh, I almost forgot. Mrs. Lothlen has asked me to announce that the final day of auditions for Pine Falls High School’s production of Romeo and Juliet is today. Our own Alex Victoria has been chosen to play the part of Romeo. (Scene freezes as Elizabeth looks up from her seat) Elizabeth: Really? He’s Romeo? Well, I guess it wasn’t that hard to predict, everyone loves him. But this could be my chance to meet him! I’ll just have to audition. Dad won’t have to know… (Scene unfreezes) Mr. Mayer: Well, class, let me tell you about what we’ll be learning this quarter… (everyone groans as the lights dim) Scene II (A school hallway. Students are looking through their lockers during passing period, the audition sign up sheet is tacked to the wall adjacent to it.) (Enter Elizabeth, walking to the sign up sheet, she bumps into Cassandra, who has walked in from the opposite wing and has the same destination) Elizabeth: Oh! Sorry, I was just going to the audition sheet… Cassandra: What a coincidence, that’s where I was going too! Are you auditioning? Elizabeth: Yes, I- Cassandra: Well, good luck! I’m auditioning for the part of Juliet, and I just KNOW that I’ll get it. You could be my nurse. Elizabeth: Wh-why thank you. I think. Cassandra: (Smiles warmly) Well, see you at the auditions tonight! (Exits) Elizabeth: Ugh! She’s more annoying every time I meet her! She’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find that What you’re looking for has been here the whole time And can’t you see that I’m the one who understands you Been here all along, so why can’t you see you belong with me? Standing by, waiting at your back door All this time, how could you not know, baby, you belong with me? (End Music) (Exits) Scene III (Elizabeth’s home. It is not very tidy, beer cans are strewed about and her father, ROGER, is lounging in his recliner with another in his hand. He is watching football and yells every time he sees something he doesn’t like. There is a staircase leading up to a room set above the other, it appears to be Elizabeth’s bedroom) (Enter Elizabeth) Elizabeth: Hi dad! I’m home from school! Roger: Huh? Oh, yeah, hi dear. (looks back at the screen) WHAT!? He fumbled!? Why would you do that, you IDIOT! Elizabeth: Well, I’ll just be in my room if you need me. (Begins to walk upstairs, humming You Belong With Me) Roger: What’s up with you? Elizabeth: (Stops humming) What do you mean? Roger: You’re so darn HAPPY! You’re never this bouncy, so what’s up? Elizabeth: Well, this boy I like is the lead role in my school’s play, so I signed up to audition for the love interest. Roger: (chuckles scornfully) You? In a PLAY? Give me a break. Elizabeth: It’s true! The auditions are in two hours. Roger: No! I need someone to make dinner, and if you remember, your mother isn’t here to do it! You are staying home! Elizabeth: But I haven’t done anything for myself! Just this once? Roger: NO! And that’s final! (Elizabeth looks on the verge of tears. She opens her mouth to argue more, but Roger lifts a hand. She stands there for a moment, then runs up the stairs and falls on her bed, crying.) Roger: (Looking at where she was standing) Oh, Angeline, what am I going to do with her? Ever since you left, I don’t know what to do. She won’t listen to anything I say. Why did you have to leave me on Christmas? I remember that day perfectly…. Elizabeth: (From upstairs) Oh, Dad, if you only knew what I wanted to say to you. How I feel about you… (Music) You and I walk a fragile line I have known it all this time But I never thought I’d live to see you break It’s getting dark and it’s all so quiet, and I can’t trust anything now And it’s coming over you like it’s all a big mistake Oh, I’m holding my breath Please don’t lose it again Something’s made your eyes grow cold Roger: Come on, why did you leave me like this? Elizabeth: I thought I had you figured out Something’s gone terribly wrong Roger: You’re all I wanted Come on, why did you leave me like this Elizabeth: I thought I had you figured out Roger: Can’t breathe whenever you’re gone Both: Can’t turn back now, I’m haunted! Roger: I stood there and watched you walk away From everything we had When I still meant every word I said to you She will try to take away my pain And she just might make me smile But the whole time I'm wishing it was you instead Elizabeth: Oh, I’m holding my breath Roger: Won’t see you again Both: Something keeps me holding on to nothing! Roger: Come on, why did you leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Elizabeth: Something’s gone terribly wrong Roger: You’re all I wanted Come on, why did you leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Can’t breathe whenever you’re gone Both: Can’t turn back now, I’m haunted! Roger: I know, I know, I just know You’re not gone, you can’t be gone, no Come on, why did you leave me like this? Elizabeth: I thought I had you figured out Something’s gone terribly wrong Won’t finish what you started Roger: Come on, why did you leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Can’t breathe whenever you’re gone Can't go back, I’m haunted! Elizabeth: Oh You and I walk a fragile line I have known it all this time But I never thought I’d see it break Both: (Roger says “You” instead of “It) Never thought I’d see it… (Lights down) Scene IV (The Pine Falls High School Drama Room. A medium-sized platform has been placed center-stage as an audition stage. A table has been set up on stage left. Sitting behind it is two seniors and MRS. LOTHLEN, the drama teacher. Four chairs have been set up on stage right. Three of them are filled, two are junior girls and the third is Elizabeth. Alex is standing next to her. Cassandra is on the stage performing the last lines of her audition monologue.) Cassandra: Stay, Tybalt, stay! Romeo, I come! This do I drink to thee! (She holds up an imaginary vial, drinks from it, then collapses. She waits a few moments, then pops back up, bows, and heads to the empty seat while the students and Mrs. Lothlen clap.) Mrs. Lothlen: Very nice, Ms. Fulton. We shall have a ten-minute break before our final three people come up. (All exit except for Elizabeth, Cassandra, and Alex) Alex: You did great Cassandra! I wouldn’t at all be surprised if you got the part. (To Elizabeth) Good luck. (He begins to walk away with Cassandra) Elizabeth: (Stopping him) Hey, Alex, isn’t it your birthday tomorrow? Alex: (looking at Cassandra, who has an incredulous look on her face) Um…… yeah. Why? Elizabeth: Well, I was wondering if you were having a party. Alex: I was thinking about it, yes. Why do you care? Elizabeth: Well, were you planning on inviting people from the cast? ‘Cause if I make it in… Alex: Are you assuming you’ll get in the cast? Elizabeth: Well, yes- Alex: You’re saying that you have more talent than Cassandra? That you’ll get in? That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard! You won’t get in the cast, Cassandra will. Now get lost! (He and Cassandra leave. Elizabeth is on the verge of tears. Mrs. Lothlen and the students come back in) Mrs. Lothlen: My, how time flies! Ms. Fall, I believe it is your turn. (She nods to Elizabeth, Elizabeth walks up and the scene freezes) Elizabeth: (She goes through the motions of an audition as she sings to the audience. (Music: The Story of Us) I used to think one day, we’d tell the story of us How we met, and the sparks flew instantly And people would say ‘They’re the lucky ones” I used to know my place was a spot next to you Now I’m searching the room for an empty seat ‘Cause lately I don’t even know what page you’re on Oh, a simple complication, miscommunications lead to fall-out So many things that I wish you knew So many walls that I can’t break through Now I’m standing alone in a crowded room and we’re not speaking And I’m dying to know, is it killing you like it’s killing me, yeah? I don’t know what to say, since the twist of fate when it all broke down But the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now (Spoken) Next Chapter How’d we end up this way? I’m nervously pulling at my clothes and trying to look busy And you’re doing your best to avoid me I’m starting to think one day I’ll tell the story of us How I lost my mind when I saw you here But you held your pride like you should’ve held me Oh, I’m scared to see the ending Why are we pretending this is nothing? I’d tell you I miss you, but I don’t know how I’ve never heard silence quite this loud Now I’m standing alone in a crowded room And we’re not speaking And I’m dying to know is it killing you like it’s killing me, yeah? I don’t know what to say, since the twist of fate when it all broke down But the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now… This is looking like a contest Of who can act like they care less But I liked it better when you were on my side The battle’s in your hands now But I would lay my armor down If you said you’d rather love than fight So many things that I wish you knew But the story of us might be ending soon Now I’m standing alone in a crowded room, and we’re not speaking And I’m dying to know, is it killing you like it’s killing me, yeah? I don’t know what to say, since the twist of fate when it all broke down But the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now, now, now (The last part is directly correlated with the actions Cassandra did in her audition. When she sings “Like it’s killing me”, she drinks and begins to choke, when she sings “It all broke down” she collapses to the ground; when she sings the last line she flops in a dramatic dead pose, pauses, then speaks the last line) We’re not speaking And I’m dying to know, is it killing you like it’s killing me, yeah? I don’t know what to say, since the twist of fate when it all broke down But the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now (spoken) The End (End Scene) Scene V (A school hallway; it is empty except for Cassandra and Alex, who are talking. Their voices become audible as the lights go up) Cassandra:…and I’m sorry that I can’t go to your party tomorrow night, but my parents are going out and I need to baby-sit. Alex: Oh, all right then. Cassandra: Okay then! Anything else you needed to talk about. Alex: Actually, yes. Why do you feel such animosity towards that girl? She didn’t do anything, and I defended you, but I regret it. Cassandra: Hey, you were the one who blew up at her- Alex: But I only did it because you seemed to hate her! Why is that? (Music) I was riding shotgun with my hair undone in the front seat of your car You had a one-hand feel on the steering wheel, the other on my heart I look around, turn the radio down, you said, “Baby, is something wrong?” I said “Nothing, I was just thinking how we don’t have a song.” And you said “Our Song is a slamming screen door, Sneaking out late, tapping on your window When we’re on the phone and you talk real slow ‘Cause it’s late and your momma don’t know Our song is the way you laugh, The first date: ‘Man, I didn’t kiss her and I should have’” Now when I get home, before I say Amen, I ask God if he Could play it again I was walking up the front porch steps after everything that day Had gone all wrong, I’d been trampled on, and lost and thrown away I went to the hallway, well on my way to my lovin’ bed I almost didn’t notice all the roses and the note that said “Our song is a slamming screen door, Sneaking out late, tapping on your window, When we’re on the phone and you talk real slow ‘Cause it’s late and your momma don’t know Our song is the way you laugh, the first date: ‘Man, I didn’t kiss her and I should have’’ Now when I get home, ‘fore I say Amen, I ask God if he Could play it again I heard every album, listened to the radio Waiting for something to come along That was as good as our song ‘Cause our song is the slamming screen door, Sneaking out late, tapping on your window, When we’re on the phone and you talk real slow ‘Cause it’s late and your momma don’t know Our song is the way you laugh, the first date: ‘Man, I didn’t kiss her and I should have’ Now when I get home, ‘fore I say Amen, I ask God if he Could play it again, play it again I was riding shotgun with my hair undone in the front seat of your car I grabbed a pen and an old napkin and wrote down Our Song… (End Music) Don’t you see? We belong together, and no nerdy little sophomore is going to take that away from us, you got it? Alex: No. Cassandra: Good, then- wait. Did you say No? Alex: Yes, that’s exactly what I said. How could you say that? I’m not a possession that you can just scream “MINE” and keep everyone else away. Has it ever occurred to you that you’re not the only thing I care about in this world? That maybe you’re not as perfect as you think? Well, it’s true. (Music begins) Alex: Not right now, guys, we just heard a song. (Music stops) Cassandra: Wait, you mean, you don’t love me? Alex: I’m not sure if I ever did. It was more of an infatuation. We’re done, Cassandra. Good luck with your baby-sitting, ‘cause you won’t be sitting on me anymore. (he exits. Cassandra stands there for a minute, then runs off sobbing) Scene VI (Elizabeth’s room. It is no longer suspended above the family room, it is her own set. She is sitting on her bed just staring at a piece of paper. There is a phone on her bedside table.) Elizabeth: (in wonderment) I…..made it? I got the part? I can’t believe it! Elizabeth Fall: Juliet! Think I couldn’t make it, Alex? Well sorry to burst your bubble, but this girl is better than your prissy show-off Cassandra! I wonder what he’s thinking right now… (The phone rings. She acts slightly confused at first, not knowing what is making the sound. When it rings again she picks it up. Alex enters holding an identical phone. He is not really there, She cannot see him, he is simply talking to her from the phone) Elizabeth: Hello, Fall residence. Alex: Elizabeth, it’s Alex. Please don’t hang up! Elizabeth: What do you want? Alex: I need to apologize. Elizabeth: Oh, so you’ll think simply saying “sorry” will change what happened? You insulted me, you berated me; how could you possibly think that just apologizing will make things better? Alex: Because it was a misunderstanding. Elizabeth: A MISUNDERSTANDING!? (Alex winces) You think saying I wouldn’t get in the cast because I wasn’t good enough was a MISUNDERSTANDING!? Alex: Yes. I saw that Cassandra wasn’t taking to you, so I made you go away. I really didn’t want to, but Cassandra could be….. difficult when she didn’t get what she wanted. Elizabeth: Could be? Why the past tense? Alex: Because we broke up. After auditions, we broke up. I can’t stand her anymore, Elizabeth! She kept rambling on about how I was hers and nothing could ever change it. Well, it IS changing. The truth is, I’ve loved you for a while now. Because… (music) The way you move is like a full-on rainstorm And I'm a house of cards You're the kind of reckless that should send me running But I kinda know that I won't get far Just close enough to touch Close enough to hope you couldn't See what I was thinking of Kiss me on the sidewalk, take away the pain 'Cause I see sparks fly whenever you smile Give me something that'll haunt me when you're not around You're a bad idea You touch me once and it's really something You find I'm even better than you imagined I would be But with you, I know it's no good And I could wait patiently, but I really wish you would Kiss me on the sidewalk, take away the pain 'Cause I see sparks fly whenever you smile Give me something that'll haunt me when you're not around Just keep on keeping your eyes on me It's just wrong enough to make it feel right I'm captivated by you, baby, like a fireworks show Kiss me on the sidewalk, take away the pain 'Cause I see sparks fly whenever you smile Give me something that'll haunt me when you're not around Oh, baby, smile And the sparks fly (End Music) Elizabeth: Wow… I don’t know what to say… Alex: Just say yes! I’ll be at the canal near the school. If you’ll be there, I’ll be happy. But if you aren’t, I’ll understand. Elizabeth: All right then…. Alex: Great! See you there, hopefully. (exits) Elizabeth: Bye. (Puts the phone down) (She sits there for a moment, her eyes wide. She squeals with delight, grabs her coat, and runs off.) Scene VII (The family room of the Fall home. Her father is wide awake, watching yet another football game. A clock on the wall shows the time as 2:30. The door opens, and Elizabeth walks in, evidently thinking Roger is asleep) Roger: So where have you been? Elizabeth: (Jumps in alarm) DAD? What are you doing up? Elizabeth: Well, I was… (she falters, not knowing what to say) Roger: I hear you talking to someone up in your room, you try to sneak away and fail miserably, what is going on? Elizabeth: Well, I’ve been… seeing someone… Roger: SEEING SOMEONE!? What is that supposed to mean? Elizabeth: It means I’m in love! With a nice boy who I’ve just started dating. Roger: DATING!? Oh no, not in my house you’re not! You won’t be able to do anything right because your mind will be obsessed with him! First it’ll be ice cream, then dances, and soon you’ll be sleeping with him! Is that any life for my daughter? Oh no, I won’t allow it! Elizabeth: You can’t! It’s my life! Roger: Not while you’re in my house! Now go upstairs, call him, and tell him you’re never going to see him again! NOW! (Elizabeth runs offstage) Roger: Ugh! The nerve of her, falling in love without my permission. She’s going to need to be taught a lesson! Now, where did I put that belt? (Elizabeth comes back in) Roger: Well, did you call him? Elizabeth: No. Roger: What do you mean, no!? You’ll do as I say, young lady! Elizabeth: No, I don’t think I will. For so long, I’ve tried to live with you and be obedient, but now I’ve got someone else in my life. So now, I think I’ll tell you how I REALLY think of you. (Music) You, with your words like knives, and swords, and weapons that you use against me You have knocked me off my feet again, got me feeling like a nothing You, with your voice like nails on a chalkboard, calling me out when I’m wounded You, picking on the weaker man Well you can take me down with just one single blow But you don’t know, what you don’t know: Someday I’ll be living in a big old city And all you’re ever gonna be is mean Someday I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me And all you’re ever gonna be is mean Why you gotta be so mean? You, with your switching sides and your walk-by lies and your humiliation You have pointed out my flaws again, as if I don’t already see them I walk with my head down, trying to block you out, ‘cause I’ve never impressed you I just wanna feel okay again. I bet you got pushed around; somebody’s made you cold But the cycle ends right now, ‘cause you can’t lead me down that road And you don’t know; what you don’t know: Someday I’ll be living in a big old city And all you’re ever gonna be is mean Someday I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me And all you’re ever gonna be is mean Why you gotta be so mean? And I can see you years from now in a bar Talking over a football game With that same big, loud opinion but, Nobody’s listening Washed up and ranting about the same old, bitter things Drunk and rumbling on just ‘bout everything But all you are is mean All you are is mean, and a liar, and pathetic, and alone in life, and Mean, and mean, and mean, and MEAN! But someday I’ll be living in a big old city, And all you’re ever gonna be is mean, yeah Someday I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me And all you’re ever gonna be is mean Why you gotta be so mean? Someday I’ll be living in a big old city, And all you’re ever gonna be is mean Someday I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me And all you’re ever gonna be is mean Why you gotta be so mean? (End Music) Roger: You wonder why I’m like this? Why I “gotta be so mean”? Because of YOU! Because you won’t listen to a word I say! (He jumps up and starts chasing her, attempting to slap her) Because you have to go fall in love! And as long as you are, you cannot live in this house, you hear me? Now get out! (He lands a slap on her cheek) GET OUT! (Elizabeth runs sobbing out of the house. Roger stares at where she ran off, then sinks to his knees, crying uncontrollably) End of Act I Act II Scene I (It is a house where the front door and porch is visible to the audience on stage left. The house is smaller and has no visible second story. The door opens onto a simple living room with a couch and a coffee table. No one is on stage. Elizabeth enters stage left and runs to the door and begins frantically ringing the doorbell) (ANGELINE FALL, Elizabeth’s mother, enters. She looks through a peephole and recoils in shock. Elizabeth somehow senses that her mother is there and cannot believe that Elizabeth is there) Elizabeth: Mom? I know you’re there. Please don’t be mad at me for coming here. Just… open the door and we can talk. (Angeline, succumbing to the look of despair on her daughter’s face, opens the door and steps outside) Angeline: What do you want? Why are you here? Why aren’t you living with HIM, like you’re supposed to? Elizabeth: Because he threw me out. (Angeline is speechless) Mom, I’m in love. I went out with a boy and lost track of the time and… (She bursts into tears) I just need a place to stay! Please! He won’t let me come back there! Angeline: Darling, calm down. (Elizabeth manages to stop crying) Now, tell the story from the beginning. Elizabeth: (Breathes deeply) I’ve fallen in love. We went out last night, and I lost track of time, and I came home last night at 2:30. I thought he was going to be asleep, but he was wide-awake and waiting for me. He told me to call my boyfriend and tell him that I will never see him again. I-(her voice cracks)I refused, and I told him that he was a horrible person and other mean things, and he started hitting me and told me to never come back to the house until I stop loving him! I had to sleep at the park all night! It was horrible! Angeline: Oh, Elizabeth! I’m sorry! But don’t worry. You’re safe here. Not like when I left… Elizabeth: Yes, it was nothing like that horrible Christmas Day… (Music) I remember tears streaming down your face when I said I’ll never let you go When all those shadows almost killed your light Angeline: I remember you said, “Don’t leave me here alone” But all that’s dead and gone and past, tonight Just close your eyes; the sun is going down You’ll be all right; no one can hurt you now Come morning light, you and I’ll be safe and sound Don’t you dare look out your window, darling, everything’s on fire The war outside our door keeps raging on Hold on to this lullaby Even when music’s gone, gone Just close your eyes; the sun is going down You’ll be all right; no one can hurt you now Come morning light, you and I’ll be safe and sound Oooooooo Elizabeth: Oooooooooo Angeline: Oooooooooo Elizabeth: Ooooooooo Both: Lalalala Ooooooooo Ooooooooo Ooooooooo Ooooooooo Lalalala Elizabeth: Just close your eyes Angeline: You’ll be all right Both: Come morning light, you and I’ll be safe and sound Ooooooo Ooooooooooo Ooooooo Ooooooooooo Ooooooo Ooooooooooo Ooooooo Ooooooooooo Ooooooo Ooooooooooo Ooooooo Ooooooooooo (End Music) Angeline: Oh, honey, I can give you a place to stay. But you’re going to have to face him sooner or later… Elizabeth: Don’t make me think about that right now! I just want to sleep. Is that spare room still a guest room? Angeline: Yes, dear. Go settle down in there, and I’ll check to see if I still have some clothes that fit you… (End Scene) Scene II (Elizabeth’s homeroom. All the students are in one big group, talking about how Alex and Elizabeth are now a couple) Student #1: So Cassandra’s GOT to be pregnant; there’s no other reason for Alex abandoning her! Student #2: Or maybe he felt he wasn’t worthy for her! She’s just too gorgeous and amazing, and he couldn’t stand to be around someone that perfect! Student #3: Yeah! And so he got her pregnant during one last thing before he left her forever! You’re right, that must be it! Student #4: Wait a minute, wait a minute, I cannot believe you guys! You’re instinctively thinking the worst of them! Has it ever occurred to you that maybe they just broke up because they didn’t love each other any more? Student #1: No, of course not! They’re perfect for one another; they even wrote a song about it! Remember, they performed it at the talent show! Student #2: Oh yeah! That beautiful little ballad that they called “Our Song”. Oh my gosh, I nearly fainted when I heard it! Student #4: You’re missing the point! Love can only go so far; sooner or later they were bound to break up, because they weren’t MEANT for each other! (The other students gasp) Student #3: What do you mean, they aren’t meant for each other? Alex is the most popular guy, and Cassandra is the most popular girl! Why should Alex give up that perfect life for HER? (This word is spoken with contempt) Student #1: Yeah! Elizabeth is just a sophomore; why should she even TRY to be with Alex? Student #2: SHHHHHHHH! If Mr. Mayer hears you saying names, he’ll send you to the office! Student #4: Will you stop talking about her as if she’s garbage? She’s just as much human as we are. Student #3: No she’s NOT! She’s a sophomore, or hadn’t you heard? Student #1: Besides, Alex doesn’t need a girl from a family with a drunk father and a mother who left! He needs a solid household to go to, like Cassandra’s! Student #4: Come on, guys, let’s sit down; class is about to start. (The Bell rings) Mr. Mayer: All right, class, settle down. Class is going to start. (Alex and Elizabeth enter, holding hands. The entire class turns to stare at them. Elizabeth manages to ignore them, but Alex is evidently uncomfortable with all the attention. They separate and walk to their desks.) Mr. Mayer: All right class, today we are going to talk about identifying imaginary functions that use the imaginary number i. (All groan) (As Mr. Mayer starts babbling about equations, one of the students writes a note and tosses it at Alex. He picks it up, reads it, then crumples it and tosses it back at the writer.) Alex: (Standing up violently) Mr. Mayer, may I be excused? Mr. Mayer: Whatever for, Alex? Alex: I’m not feeling very good in my current surroundings. Mr. Mayer: Oh, in that case, please, go ahead and leave. (Alex runs out, knocking stuff over in the process. Elizabeth, without being excused, runs after him.) Mr. Mayer: Well, then, let’s get back to i. (All students groan) (End Scene) Scene III (A school hallway. Alex is leaning with his back to the audience, crying against the locker. Elizabeth enters, runs over to him, and tries to console him) Elizabeth: Alex, what happened? One minute we’re listening to Mr. Mayer, the next you’re storming out of the room! What changed? Alex: What changed is that people don’t like you! One of them wrote me a note that said…. Well, that doesn’t matter. What matters is it was hateful towards you, and in a way towards me! I can’t stand it! I’ve never been talked about in this way! ………. We can’t be together anymore. Elizabeth: Wait, WHAT!? Alex: I can’t be seen with you if it makes people talk about me like this. Elizabeth: I can’t believe this. You’re dumping me after a week? Because of what people are saying! Alex: Yes. I’m sorry, but it’s true. Elizabeth: How could you do this? We were something. What happened to the sparks? Alex: They burned out. Elizabeth: What’s burning out is the future we might have had. You CHANGED me, Alex. It might have been for the better. (Alex begins to leave) No, don’t leave yet. There’s something I need you to imagine… (Music) Oh, Oh, You’ll be in college, working part-time waiting tables Left a small town, never looked back You’ll be a flight risk with a fear of falling I’m wondering why we bother with love if it never lasts I say, can you believe it? As we’ll be lying on the couch, the moment? Alex: I can see it, yes, yes, I can see it now Elizabeth: Do you remember, we were sitting there by the water You put your arm around me for the first time You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter You are the best thing that’s ever been mine Flash forward, and we’re taking on the world together And there’s a drawer of my things at your place You’ll learn my secrets and you’ll figure out why I’m guarded You’ll say we’ll never make my parents’ mistakes Alex: But we’ll have bills to pay! We’ll have nothing figured out Elizabeth: Oh, when it is hard to take, yes, yes, This is what I’ll think about: Do you remember, we were sitting there by the water You put your arm around me for the first time You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter You are the best thing that’s ever been mine Do you remember all the city lights on the water You made me start to believe for the first time You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter You are the best thing that’s ever been mine, oh, Alex: And there’ll be a fight, two-thirty A.M Everything is going to slip out of our hair You’ll go out crying and I’ll follow you out into the street Elizabeth: Braced myself for the goodbye ‘Cause that’s all I’ve ever known Then you took me by surprise You said, “I’ll never leave you alone.” And you said, “I remember how we felt sitting by the water, And every time I look at you, it’s like the first time I fell in love with a careless man’s careful daughter She is the best thing that’s ever been mine” Alex: Hold on Elizabeth: Make it last Alex: Hold on Elizabeth: Never turn back! You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter You are the best thing that’s ever been mine Do you believe it? We’re gonna make it now I can see it I can see it now… (End Music) Alex: Elizabeth, stop! Nothing you say to me will change what I’m feeling! Stop talking to me about a future that will never be! Elizabeth: But it COULD be! Alex: No! It CAN’T. Goodbye, Elizabeth. I’m sorry that I held you under false pretenses. (He exits; Elizabeth stands there for a moment, then sings softly, slowly, and a cappella) Elizabeth: You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter You are the best thing, that’s never been mine… (She runs off crying) Scene IV (It is a house that looks much like Angeline Fall’s, except it has a staircase leading down into an unseen basement. The front door is visible and is on stage left. We can hear Cassandra’s voice offstage) Cassandra: Thomas Andrew Fulton, you get those scissors out of your little sister’s hair RIGHT NOW! (Alex enters from stage left and walks nervously up to the front porch. He rings the doorbell, and Cassandra walks over and opens the door) Alex: (nervously) Hi, Cassandra, please don’t slam the door on me. Cassandra: What do YOU want? How could you possibly come back here after what you did? Alex: Because I want us to get back together? (Cassandra laughs scornfully) Cassandra: Really? Starting to learn that I was right after all; that a sophomore could never compare with us? Well, you’re a little late. Alex: What do you mean? Cassandra: What I mean is that I’m over you. Are you really that conceited? That if you just came over and said that you wanted us back together that I’d fall all over you? Sorry to burst your bubble. Alex: Come on, Cassandra, what do you want me to do? Cassandra: I want you to leave! What I DON’T want is you begging me to come back! Alex: Cassandra, come on, be reasonable! If you had dumped me, I would have taken you back! Cassandra: Ah, yes, but YOU dumped ME. And I am NOT taking you back. (Music) Let’s face the obvious: I didn’t get my perfect fantasy I realized that you love her more than you could ever love me So go and tell your friends that I’m obsessive and Crazy, that’s fine, you won’t mind if I say, by the way I hate that stupid old pick-up truck you never let me drive You’re a redneck heartbreak who’s really bad at lying Watch me a strike a match on all my wasted time As far as I’m concerned, you’re just another picture to burn There’s no time for tears; I’m sitting here planning my revenge There’s nothing stopping me from going out with all of your best friends And if you come again saying sorry to me My daddy’s gonna show you how sorry you’ll be ‘Cause I hate that stupid old pick-up truck you never let me drive You’re a redneck heartbreak who’s really bad at lying Watch me strike a match on all my wasted time As far as I’m concerned, you’re just another picture to burn And if you’re missing me, better keep it to yourself ‘Cause coming back around here could be bad for your health ‘Cause I hate that stupid old pick-up truck you never let me drive You’re a redneck heartbreak who’s really bad at lying Watch me strike a match on all my wasted time In case you hadn’t heard, I really, really hate that Stupid old pick-up truck you never let me drive You’re a redneck heartbreak who’s really bad at lying Watch me strike a match on all my wasted time As far as I’m concerned, you’re just another picture to burn Burn, burn, burn baby burn You’re just another picture to burn Baby, BURN (End Music) Alex: Cassandra, PLEASE? I need someone beside me. Cassandra: Have I not made it clear? We are NEVER, EVER, EVER getting back together. Now get out of here before I tell my dad you’re trying to kidnap me. Alex: I thought your dad wasn’t home… Cassandra: GO AWAY. (She slams the door and storms off) (Alex walks forward and the curtain closes) Alex: How could I be so stupid? Why couldn’t I use common sense? Of COURSE Cassandra wouldn’t take me back, I insulted her beyond imagination! And now I don’t have Elizabeth either. It seems like my entire life is one big regret… (Music of “Haunted” comes on) Alex: (To the Conductor) ENOUGH with the music! Can’t you see I don’t want to sing right now! (Medium length pause) Alex:… Okay, maybe I do need to sing… but not that one! (Music of “The Story of Us”) Alex: I used to think one day, I’d tell the story of us How we met, and the sparks flew instantly But that story is starting to disappear Now because of myself, I am losing you both And my world’s getting darker everyday Just because of my pride, and I’m insensitive (As he sings, the curtain rises to reveal his homeroom, in which everyone is frozen. Elizabeth is there and seems to be totally inattentive, even when frozen) Oh, my simple complications, my miscommunications led to fall-outs So many things that you wish I knew Now the story of us will be ending soon (He steps back, behind the proscenium to his desk) Now I’m standing alone in a crowded room And we’re not speaking And I’m dying to know, is it killing you like it’s killing me, yeah? I don’t know what to say, since that twist of fate when it all broke down But the story of us is just like a tragedy now, now, now We’re not speaking And I’m dying to know, is it killing you like it’s killing me, yeah? I don’t know what to say, since that twist of fate when it all broke down But the story of us is just like a tragedy now (Spoken) The End. (End Music) (Everything unfreezes) Mr. Mayer: Ah, Alex, so kind of you to join us. Now, let’s learn about how to graph quadratic equations by HAND… (All groan) End Scene Scene V (The guest room in Angeline’s house, where Elizabeth has been living. She is one the bed, trying to focus on homework, but we can view her inner turmoil through her monologue) Elizabeth: Let’s see… what’s two numbers that add to twelve and multiply to negative forty-five?... Ugh, who am I kidding? I can’t focus on homework! This dull ache in my chest is all I can think about. I always thought it was just a metaphor when they say heartache, but now I know. I feel like I might have a heart attack from all the pain it’s causing me. Why did I have to fall hopelessly in love with someone who cares more about his image? He dumped me because of what people were SAYING. I can’t believe it. I told him about the future I imagined, and was that enough to make him come to his senses? NO! Sometimes I wish I didn’t have a heart, just so it wouldn’t get broken. And Algebra does NOT help. Angeline: (Walks in carrying a cordless phone) Elizabeth? It’s the telephone. Someone named Cassandra Fulton. (Elizabeth looks shocked; Angeline gives her the phone and exits) (Elizabeth gulps and puts the phone to her ear, just as Cassandra enters from stage left holding a phone of her own) Elizabeth: (Clears throat) Y-yes? Cassandra: What did you DO to him? Elizabeth: What? Who? Cassandra: You know darn well who. Alex came around here after school and asked, no, BEGGED me to take him back. What happened? Elizabeth: We were just in Algebra when someone gave him a note. He read it and stormed out of the room. I followed him and tried to console him, because I could tell the note said something insulting, but he just pushed me away and told me we couldn’t be together anymore. Cassandra: Well, that explains a lot. Elizabeth: But why did you call me? I thought you hated me… Cassandra: I do, but I needed to find out why he had the audacity to try and get me back. Bye. (She exits) Elizabeth: (Puts the phone down) Well, that just takes my pain to a whole new level. First he dumps me, then he tries to get her back, all to make his image stronger. That’s just sickening. Why did I have to fall in love with him? (The phone rings; Elizabeth jumps. She picks it up, and Alex enters with a phone as well) Elizabeth: Hello? Alex: Please, I am BEGGING you, don’t hang up. Elizabeth: Hm, it seems like this situation has happened before. Last time I accepted your apology. I don’t think I’ll make the same mistake twice. Alex: I know I messed up, big time. I said some things that I shouldn’t have said and- Elizabeth: Some things? More like everything you said to me! I don’t want to talk to you! (She hangs up) (Alex looks at the phone, shocked. He tries to dial again. At the same time, Elizabeth looks distraught at what she just said and dials Alex’s number. The phone rings before she is finished, and she immediately picks it up) Both: I’m sorry for what just happened. Elizabeth: And I know that I should be mad at you, but I just can’t stay that way. That’s not who I am. Alex: I know, but that still doesn’t forgive me for what I did. Elizabeth: It would if you stopped paying attention to what other people think! One day, I’ll be living in New York, or somewhere similar, and it would be wonderful if I had someone by my side to face the naysayers out there… (Music) Elevator buttons and morning air Strangers’ silence makes me want to take the stairs If you were here, we’d laugh about their vacant stares But right now, my time is theirs Alex: Seems like there’s always someone who disapproves Elizabeth: They’ll judge it like they know about me and you And the verdict comes from those with nothing else to do The jury’s out, but my choice is you So don’t you worry your pretty little mind People throw rocks at things that shine And life makes love look hard The stakes are high, the water’s rough But this love is ours Alex: You never know what people have up their sleeves Elizabeth: (Indifferent) What? Ghosts from your past are gonna jump out at me? Alex: Lurking in the shadows with their lip gloss smiles Elizabeth: But I don’t care, ‘cause right now you’re mine So don’t you worry your pretty little mind People throw rocks at things that shine And life makes love look hard The stakes are high, the water’s rough But this love is ours And it’s not theirs to speculate if it’s wrong and Your hands are tough, But they are where mine belong and I’ll fight their doubt and give you faith with this song for you ‘Cause I love the gap between your teeth Alex: And I love the riddles that you speak Elizabeth: And any snide remarks from my father about your tattoos will be ignored ‘Cause my heart is YOURS So don’t you worry your pretty little mind People throw rocks at things that shine And life makes love look hard Don’t you worry your pretty little mind People throw rocks at things that shine But they can’t take what’s ours They can’t take what’s ours The stakes are high Alex: The water’s rough Both: But this love is ours (End Music) (They both put down the phones and run to hug each other. After a small pause, Alex speaks up) Alex: There’s just one problem Elizabeth: What’s that? Alex: I don’t have any tattoos. (Elizabeth laughs and kisses him on the cheek) Elizabeth: Mom, I’m going out! Angeline: (Offstage) All right! Don’t stay out too long! (Alex and Elizabeth laugh and run offstage, hand in hand) Scene VI (A Month Later) (The stage is empty. An announcer’s voice comes on) Announcer: Ladies and gentlemen, may I present you, Pine Falls High School’s cast and crew for William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet! (A pseudo-curtain call is enacted onstage. Alex and Elizabeth come on last, both in Elizabethan dress. They wave, go through the motions, but since it is the last night, they have flowers for the director) Elizabeth: Thank you so much for coming tonight. Before we leave, we have a couple of flowers to hand out. First of all, none of this is possible without the help of our wonderful director, a woman who worked tirelessly to make this production possible: Mrs. Lothlen! (Mrs. Lothlen enters, waving. Elizabeth hands her a bouquet of roses.) Alex: Next, we have our beloved math teacher, who served as technical director: Mr. Mayer! (Mr. Mayer enters somewhat reluctantly to receive his flowers) Elizabeth: And we have one more thing. As you’ve seen, Romeo and Juliet’s story of love is a tragedy. Everyone hates them for their feelings, and they are rejected. As some of you may know, Alex and I have faced these same obstacles after we fell in love. Well, I’ve written a song about what SHOULD have happened to Romeo and Juliet. It’s sort of like the story Alex and I have been making. Although, now that I think about it, it’s more like a song. So you could say that Romeo and Juliet have one song, and Alex and I have another. But Romeo and Juliet’s song is sort of sad, whereas our song is… well, how about we both explain? (They look at each other as the music plays) Both: Our song is a slamming screen door Sneaking out late, tapping on your window When we’re on the phone, and we talk real slow ‘Cause it’s late, and our mommas don’t know Our song is the way we laugh The first date: Man, I didn’t kiss (Alex says “her”) him and I should have Now when I get home, ‘fore I say amen, I ask God if he Could play it again Ales: But what about after we nearly broke up? Elizabeth: Well… I was walking up the front porch steps After everything that day had gone all wrong, been trampled on And lost, and thrown away I was walking down the hallway, well on my way to my loving bed I almost didn’t notice all the roses and the note that said, Both: “Our song is the slamming screen door Sneaking out late, tapping on your window When we’re on the phone, and we talk real slow ‘Cause it’s late, and our mommas don’t know Our song is the way we laugh The first date: Man, I didn’t kiss (Alex says “her”) him and I should have Now when I get home, ‘fore I say amen, I ask God if he could Play it again, play it again, oh yeah Elizabeth: I was riding shotgun with my hair undone in the front seat of his car I grabbed a pen and an old napkin and I wrote down our song (End Music) Alex: Well, now that you know what our song is, do you guys want to here Romeo and Juliet’s song? It’s from Juliet’s point of view. (He hands the stage to Elizabeth) (Music: “Love Story”) Elizabeth: We were both young when I first saw you I closed my eyes, and the flashback starts You’re standing there On the balcony in summer air See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns See you make your way through the crowd to say hello Little did I know… That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles And my daddy said, “Stay away from Juliet” And I was crying on the staircase, begging you, “Please don’t go” And I said, “Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone I’ll be waiting, all that’s left to do is run You’ll be the prince, and I’ll be the princess It’s a love story, baby just say ‘Yes’” Now I’m sneaking out to the garden to see you We keep quiet, ‘cause we’re dead if they knew So close your eyes Escape this town for a little while Oh, ‘cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter And my daddy said, “Stay away from Juliet” But you were everything to me, I was begging you, “Please don’t go” Then I said, “Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone I’ll be waiting; all that’s left to do is run You’ll be the prince, and I’ll be the princess It’s a love story, baby, just say ‘Yes’” Romeo, save me, they’re trying to tell me how to feel This love is difficult, but it’s real Don’t be afraid, we’ll make it out of this mess It’s a love story, baby, just say “Yes” I got tired of waiting Wondering if you were ever coming around My faith in you was fading Then I met you on the outskirts of town I said, “Romeo, save me, I’ve been feeling so alone I’ve been waiting for you but you never come Is this in my head? I don’t know what to think.” He kneels to the ground and pulls out a ring and says Alex: Marry me, Juliet, you’ll never have to be alone I love you, and that’s all I really know I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress It’s a love story, baby, just say “Yes” Both: ‘Cause we were both young, when I first saw you… (Music Ends, they bow. Elizabeth’s mother, who has been sitting in the audience, runs up to her and hugs her) Angeline: Darling, you were wonderful! As were you, Alex. Alex: Thank you, Mrs. Fall. Your daughter was the real star, though. (Roger’s voice comes from the audience) Roger: Angeline! Elizabeth! (He runs up to the stage, over to Elizabeth, and gives her a hug) Elizabeth: Wha-? Dad? What are you doing here? Angeline: Yes, why? Last I heard, you never wanted to see her again. Roger: (Nervously) I know that I was, well, harsh that night. But believe me, I couldn’t stay that way. As soon as Elizabeth left, I felt exactly how I did when you left, Angeline. (Music: Haunted Reprise) I stood there and watched her walk away From the little that we had Now I don’t mean any word I said to you And I tried to erase my pain But it didn’t make smile And the whole time, I was missing you instead Oh, I thought in my head I wouldn’t see you again But something kept me holding onto nothing Angeline: Come on, why did you treat her like this I thought I had you figured out Roger: Something went terribly wrong She’s all I wanted Come on, why did YOU leave me like this I thought I had you figured out I can’t breathe whenever you’re gone Can’t turn back, I’m haunted! Oh, She and I walk a fragile line I have known it all this time But I never thought I’d see it break Never thought I’d see it (End Music) Elizabeth: Oh, Dad, I didn’t know… Roger: You couldn’t know. But it’s fine now. (Cassandra runs up to the stage and Alex) Alex: Um, thanks, Cassandra. What are you doing here? I thought you hated me. Cassandra: I did, once. But, now that I think about it, you did the right thing. If you hadn’t dumped me, I wouldn’t have met my new boyfriend. He’s perfect for me! So, in a way, thank you for dumping me. Alex: Um, you’re welcome. Cassandra: (To Elizabeth) Congratulations, Elizabeth. Not only was that the best performance of Juliet I’ve seen, but you have an amazing boyfriend. Don’t lose him! Elizabeth: Thanks, Cassandra. (Notices her parents talking) Oh, shhh! I want to watch this; this is the first time my parents have spoken since they divorced! (They move off to the side as the lights go down, until there are only two spotlights on Angeline and Roger; the rest of the lights are down.) Roger: Well, Angeline, now that you know how I felt, what are you going to do about it? Angeline: I don’t know… From what I’ve seen from you in the past, I can’t make a decision. Roger: Then don’t think of the past! Just think about now, and imagine that we're seeing each other for the first time in years. I'll start. (Music: Back to December) "I’m so glad you made time to see me How’s life? Tell me, how’s your family? I haven’t seen them in a while" Angeline: “I’ve been good, busier than ever…” Roger: We’ll small talk, work and the weather But your guard is up, and I know why Angeline: Because the last time you saw me Is still burned in the back of your mind You gave me roses, and I left them there to die So this is me swallowing my pride Standing in front of you, saying “I’m sorry for that night” And I go back to December all the time It turns out freedom ain’t nothing but missing you Wishing I’d realized what I had when you were mine I go back to December, turn around, and make it alright Roger: And I go back to December all the time These days, I haven’t been sleeping I’m staying up, playing back you leaving When your birthday passed, and I didn’t call Then I think about summer, all the beautiful times I watched you laughing from the passenger side And realized I loved you in the fall Angeline: And then the cold came, the dark days When fear crept into my mind You gave me all your love, and all I gave you was goodbye So this is me, swallowing my pride Standing in front of you, saying “I’m sorry for that night” I go back to December all the time It turns out freedom ain’t nothing but missing you Wishing I’d realized what I had when you were mine I go back to December, turn around, and change my own mind Both: I go back to December all the time Angeline: I miss your tan skin Roger: Your sweet smile Both: So good to me, so right Roger: But when you left my open arms that December night It was the first time you ever saw me cry Maybe this is wishful thinking Probably mindless dreaming But if we loved again, I swear I’d love you right I’d go back in time and change it, but I can’t So, if the chain is on your door, I’ll understand Angeline: (speaking) No This is me, swallowing my pride Standing in front of you, saying “I’m sorry for that night” And I go back to December It turns out freedom ain’t nothing but missing you Wishing I’d realized what I had when you were mine I go back to December, turn around, and make it alright Roger: I go back to December, turn around, and change my own mind Both: I go back to December all the time, all the time (End Music) Roger: Come here, Elizabeth. Your mother and I have something to tell you. (Elizabeth comes over) Angeline: Dear, your father and I have decided to get back together. (Elizabeth squeals with delight and hugs them both) (Cassandra walks over to Alex) Cassandra: Alex, I’d like to apologize. I guess that when you broke up with me, I was so attached to you that losing you was like tearing me in two. But, like I said, it was all for the best. Now, go over to her! (Alex crosses over to the Falls. Roger looks over him) Roger: So, this is the boy that I’ve heard so much about. Well, he’s not so bad. But, if you do anything to hurt her, then I really will tell you to “Stay away from Juliet”. But, in the meantime, you can love my daughter all you want. Cassandra: And I won’t be mad at you anymore, Alex. Like I said, I’ve found a new boyfriend. But I still think we should be friends. (She hugs Elizabeth) ALL of us should be friends. Then, when we’re old, we can look back at all the good times we had together. Alex: (Chuckles weakly) Why would you be looking that far in the future, Cassandra? Maybe you can’t wait to see me as an old man. Cassandra: Alex, I want to be friends with you, really. Remember that. Alex: I’m not sure if I can. Elizabeth: Oh, Alex, calm down and listen to her. (Music: “Long Live”) I said remember this moment, in the back of my mind Cassandra and Elizabeth: I said remember this feeling Long live the walls we crashed through Long live all the mountains we moved Both: Cassandra: That you'll stand by her forever Long, long live the walls we crashed through Singing, long live all the mountains we moved One day, we will be remembered (Cassandra and Alex hug.) (Music: Finale; it begins with “Mine) Elizabeth: See Alex? It all turned out for the best! And next time, if you ever lose sight of what’s really important, this is what I’ll say. Do you remember how we felt sitting by the water You put your arms around me for the first time You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter You are the best thing that’s ever been mine Alex: I remember how we felt sitting by the water And every time I look at you, it’s like the first time I fell in love with a careless man’s careful daughter She is the best thing that’s ever been mine (Music switches to “Safe & Sound) Roger: I remember tears streaming down your face when I said, “I’ll never let you go” And all those shadows almost killed your light Angeline: I remember you said, “Don’t leave me here alone” But all that’s dead, and gone, and past tonight Both: Just close your eyes; the sun is going down You’ll be all right; no one can hurt you now Come morning light, you and I’ll be safe and sound Ooooooo Oooooooooo Oooooo Ooooooooo (Music changes to “Ours) Elizabeth: See, it’s not theirs to speculate if it’s wrong, and Your hands are tough, but they are where mine belong, and I’ll fight their doubt and give you faith with this song for you ‘Cause I love the gap between your teeth Alex: And I love the riddles that you speak Elizabeth: And any snide remarks from my father about your tattoos will be ignored ‘Cause my heart is yours Both: So don’t you worry your pretty little mind People throw rocks at things that shine, And life makes love look hard All (Elizabeth, Alex, Roger, Angeline, and Cassandra): Don’t you worry your pretty little mind People throw rocks at things that shine, But they can’t take what’s ours They can’t take what’s ours Alex & Elizabeth: The stakes are high Roger, Angeline, and Cassandra: The water’s rough All: But this love is ours (The lights go down and the curtain closes) End of “Ours” © 2015 Umbreomancer |
