Symphony of EmoticonsA Poem by RyanHiding our emotions behind breath-less words: Without inflection, I pick my speech carefully. My excitement shows not in the widening of my eyes, not the dimples near my lips, but the number of exclamation marks my thumb pounds into my phone. I want to feel the vibrations your thoughts impose on the air as you speak them. I want to see the contractions of your pupils, watch your chest rise and fall with every note you play.
A human smile is too much to ask for these days. The best I can hope for are semicolons and parenthesis. The snorting giggle that echoes between my ears every time I hear a bad joke replaced by onomatopoeia, or three letter palindromes. I no longer look for your reflection in mirrored windows, listen for your voice in a crowd. I simply wait for an electronic chime from my pocket.
