Schizo In LoveA Story by Umbra-ReginaMina lost her obsession,Danny. The love of her life. With drugs involved, how can she begin a new relationship while Danny is still involved in her life?He came to me in a box. Not his body, but his voice. "I need you..." I whimpered in to a cell phone as I held on to it with two shaking hands as if was the only thing keeping me alive. A large box was left on my door step one day. It only contained a phone. That's it. Not even a return address, but I knew where it came from. It belonged to Danny. He soothed me in that husky voice of his, "I know, babe. We're going to make it. I promise." It's been two years now since he's been gone. I thought that I wasn't going to make it. I would have killed myself if he called even a day later. "They all told me that we'd never last. They told me to forget about you..." He was the love of my life. Still is. "They'll never get us, babe. You'll always be mine. I promise you that," he vowed. I could picture him with a hand holding the phone to his ear and the other hanging on loosely to the back of his jeans. I remembered him having a twinkle in his eyes when he spoke to me like that. "And Mina?" "Hm?" Just then the doorbell rang. I sat up on my bed. "Is there someone else?" Someone else? The phrase echoed in my head. Danny was the only one who existed in my world. He meant everything to me. He was my better half. Replacing him was impossible. "Never!" I cried. "Listen, I have to go. Call me later?" That was the catch. I was unable to call him. The phone could only receive calls, but I was fine with that. He called me as much as he could, which was more than twice a day. I headed downstairs and was surprised to see Tim, decked out in his uniform and everything. He was the cop who busted me for using. Lately he's been stopping by, just to flirt. "Tim! What are you doing here?" I asked accusingly. He never got the hint. I didn't move to the side or even usher him inside, but he took my hostile stance as an invitation to parade on in. "Your sister gave me a call earlier. Said that she's worried about you. I am too. That's why I'm here." First of all, my sister was the one who disapproved the most of me dating Danny. Her being worried about me was a joke! She was just trying to ruin everything. If she ever knew about the phone, I'd lose him forever. Tim closed the door behind himself, trapping me. He took a quick glance around the living room in search of coke, marijuana, or any needles. I wasn't an idiot. I never left that stuff out in the open. I watched him intently as his nose twitched and he got a whiff of the place. "You can't keep smoking pot, Mina," he scolded, tapping me on the nose with his pointer finger, earning a glare on my part. He chuckled prior to walking over to the couch and pulling the cushions out of place and digging deep. "What the hell are you doing!" I exclaimed. "Who said you could tear apart my house!" He rose his head to me confused. He was so sure he'd find it there. It was too obvious of a spot. I knew he'd look there. He looked around quickly before moving on to the kitchen. I was at his heels making futile attempts to stop him by pulling at his arm, but he trudged forward, as if I were a mere gust of air. "You're not going to find anything!" "Hmm." He opened the drawer for the eating utensils, but I jumped in front of him before he could check the cabinet below it where the pots and pans were located. "You can't do this! You don't have a warrant!" I cried in desperation. He pushed me aside as if I were a mutt. "Yes I can. If you forgot, I'm your parole officer, honey." He got on his knees and reached to the very back of the cabinet and that's where he found it. He withdrew a bag of marijuana. He peered up at me and waved the bag at me . "Do you know how much trouble you can get in to for having this in your possession?" I suffocated my face with my hands. "I don't want to go to jail!" I was hysterical. "I'll do anything!" I felt him standing next to me. "Anything?" he repeated. I removed my hands and found a sly grin gracing his features. "Dinner tomorrow night would suffice." "What?" I whimpered. He was already on his way out with the pot in his hand. "That's...that's...You can't do that!" He turned around. "Maybe so, but I'm sure that you're aware of what I can do." He kissed my forehead as if he were my boyfriend. "I'll pick you up at eight." After getting exactly what he wanted, he was gone. I heard that familiar ring tone going off upstairs. I stampeded to my bedroom and lunged for the phone. "Danny?" I inquired. "You're just going to let him do that to you?" he spat. If he were here right now, Tim would have been knocked out, or worse. Dead. "I...I have no other choice," I admitted, completely defeated. I lied down on my belly, looking much like a teenage girl speaking to her crush. The side of my face crashed on to the sheets. "I can't go to jail..." "Do whatever the hell you want! Just know there will be consequences." Click. "Danny? Danny?" I put the phone down. I didn't expect him to sympathize. When we began dating, he didn't allow me have any guy friends. Going out to dinner with a different guy must have driven him insane. I knew that he'd get over it, because he loved me, but him being angry at me made me a nervous wreck. What if he never called me back? There was only one way to calm myself down. I peeked under my bed and reached for a brown bag. Tim didn't find all of it... In the middle of the night I woke up to my back being in pain. I thought that I just slept on it wrong, but truth be told, it was due to multiple bruises, looking much like a scatter plot. The only explanation I could find for this was Danny, as crazy as that sounds. I tried to shake it off and go about my daily routine, but he was the only thing on my mind. After showering, I took off for work, gripping the phone tightly. The phone didn't ring. Not once. Usually he'd call by now. I couldn't wait until the day was over. When dinner came, I'd have to avert Tim's interest from me so that he'd never come back. As the time whined down for my working hours to be over, I became more anxious by the second. It was seven. I walked back home and I had a couple minutes before he was supposed to show up, although I hoped that he wouldn't, but surely enough the sound of the doorbell graced the house, making a groan to erupt from my throat. He commended, "You look lovely." I couldn't help but to enjoy the sight of him lacking his uniform. He wore dress pants and a button down shirt. He wasn't an ugly guy, and his physique was a force to be reckoned with, so I suppose matters could have been worse. Irritated, I shook my head. What was I thinking? This is the cop who busted me for Pete's sake. "It's just my work clothes. No big deal," I rejected as casual as I could. "What's your occupation?" I cut my eyes at him. "Drug dealing," I answered sarcastically. After receiving a bewildered stare, I snarled, "What were you expecting, prostitution?" I closed the door behind me and noticed the police car parked in my drive way. He laughed openly at me. "Mina! You're a riot!" He opened the door of the driver's side, but hesitated to sit down when he saw I was reluctant to enter. "You can't possibly expect me to get in to that." I never had a pleasant experience in a cop car. He offered, "If it makes you feel any better, we could drive with the sirens on. Going to dinner is emergency enough for me. I'm starving!" "Fine..." I huffed. Off the record, he was totally serious about putting the sirens on. When we arrived, immediately I knew that I wasn't going to be paying whether he expected me to or not. Seemed like he found the most expensive restaurant in the area. On top of that, the place was packed, so that told me the food was decent at the very least. I didn't think we'd get a seat for hours, but as it turns out, he made reservations. "I was talking to your sister earlier today," He started. We'd just sat down. "She was telling me about Daniel." "What of it?" I hissed. I felt the phone in my pocket almost sting my hip. "First of all, I'm sorry about all that happened...but I'm also concerned about you. You couldn't have taken it well, seeing as you were in an abusive relationship." "Is that what Tina calls it? Abusive?" I growled. "It was love. Pure love. Shows what you know..." Just as I said that, it felt like someone was poking the bruises on my back. He disagreed, "That's not love. She told me that he threw you down the stairs and even tried to set you on fire! You're lucky that she was around to protect you." "Protect me! She's the reason that he's gone! He loved me. She was just jealous that no one was ever so passionate about her like that." He reached his hand across the table and held my hand in his. "I'm sorry to be so personal like that. It's not my place to ask. Let's just enjoy dinner. Does that sound good to you?" In response I nodded darkly. He rambled on about topics I had no interest in, so I droned him out. When our entrees were served, I found myself asking, "What made you want to be a cop?" I couldn't handle another lecture on taxes or his favorite football team. His eye brows fell casting a shadow over his eyes and his mouth gaped. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you." "Try me," I challenged, propping me elbows on the table. "I didn't become one just to get away with breaking laws. I want to help people." Either he was a professional liar, or he was genuine. I wasn't going to let him get off that easily. "So constantly entering, searching my house, and then threatening me to go to dinner with you is your way of helping me?" I meant for that to sound a lot more bitter, but once I said it, it didn't sound all that bad. He leaned in toward me as he countered, "You're not in jail right now. I know, I know. I'm a little pushy, but I'm just trying to get you back on your feet. You understand, right?" I shrugged halfheartedly. "I guess so." "I'm serious. I've seen so many people fall victim to drug use, but I think you're different. I really want to make sure that you end up okay." I looked down, my stone face shattered and tears surfaced, but I didn't let them fall. "But...it's too hard. I can't go a day without it." "I know, I know. That's what I'm here for. The first step is to get the substances out of your possession. When you get home, you can give it all to me. There won't be any penalty. I won't put the possession under your personal record. There won't be any fines either." I was silent for a long moment. "Thanks, Tim" With a large smile, he nodded in acknowledgment. My purse began to ring. He watched me as I anxiously searched for my phone. "Hello?" "You can't seriously be falling for this. Do you really believe he wants to help you? Nothing would make him happier than seeing you in jail," Danny enlightened me. "I...I..." I stuttered, my mind completely split. "You don't believe me?" he asked in disbelief. "I'd never lie to you, babe." "I have to go. Call me later. Please." "We'll see..." Click. I turned my attention back to Tim, who looked un-informed. He noted, "I didn't hear your phone ring." "Really? It was sort of loud." He chuckled. "Maybe it's just getting late. Shall we take our leave?" I nodded surely. He drove me back to my house and parked in front of my house. "Here we are." I nodded looking straight ahead. "I'll stop by tomorrow. If you want to put it in a bag, I'll dispose of it for you." I nodded again, but this time I looked at him. He leaned toward me. I almost moved away, but decided against it. He planted a gentle kiss on my cheek. "Sleep well." Immediately when I stepped foot in my home, my phone rang again. "Danny!" I called desperately. "You're letting him kiss you now? Is he my replacement? That must be it." His voice was crass. He was getting really pissed. I was in a world of trouble. "No! Never! He's a fool. I'm just using him so I don't have to go to jail! He means nothing to me!" I shrieked. "Prove it." Click. My voice echoed, "Prove it?" The next morning, I woke up to my doorbell. I didn't sleep well. Not at all. I smoked pot before I blacked out on the couch. Not only that, but I couldn't get Danny off of my mind. It felt like a boulder on my heart. I didn't even ponder who it could be when I opened my door. Tim stood there grinning like a Cheshire cat, but once he got a good look at me, he looked like he was in a horror movie. "What happened to you!" He pointed an accusing finger at my face. "Did you get in to a fight?" "What's wrong with me?" I began to panic. He charged in to my house and directed me to a mirror. I had a black eye. Danny punished me. "I...dropped a jar of pickles. It was from the top shelf, so it kind of hit me like, boom!" I demonstrated with my hands nervously. "Oh my...You'd better put ice on it," he instructed me. After things settled down, and I was relaxing on my couch with a bag of frozen peas my eye, he questioned, "Did you have that bag for me?" I looked back at him, looked him dead in the eye and lied, "I disposed of it myself. I just had to know that it would be gone for good." "I understand that you needed some type of closure." "I have to go to work soon. Would you mind..." "Oh, of course!" He kissed my forehead. "Feel better." Minutes after he left, my ring tone filled my desolate home. I didn't even have the chance to say 'Hello?'. "I'm doing all of this to you out of love. That guy doesn't love should know the difference." In agreement, I whimpered, "I do." In the middle of the night, I woke up in so much pain that I couldn't even get out of bed. I reached for my phone. Not Danny's. Mine. I called an ambulance. It turned out that my shoulder was dislocated. I couldn't sleep the rest of that night. I don't know if it was because of the uncomfortable hospital bed, or if I was just dying for Danny's call. His phone sat a nearby table. "I think I get what's going on now," Tim announced. He sat next to my bed. He brought me a bouquet of flowers and chocolate. "Someone is doing this to you. If you just tell me who's doing this, I can get them behind bars in an instant!" "No, you can't." I sneered. "I don't want them there any way." "What! Just look at yourself! If you don't do something, it's going to keep happening!" he exclaimed. "This isn't love, Mina. I can show you love if you just give me a chance..." He stood up and leaned down toward me. When I didn't show any signs of disapproval the closer he became, he took the chance to plant a kiss on my lips. The stranger part was that I kissed him back. "I think it's time that we end this," I told Danny. It's been three weeks, and this was the first time he called since the incident. "Why! Because of that damn cop!" he accused. "He's only using you! He only wants you for sex!" "No!" I cried. "You're wrong! He would never hit me and says he loves me every day!" If Danny were there, he would have hit me by now. "I'm not good enough for you, is that it? Just because I show you love in a different way!" "Danny. You're dead. What do you expect me to do." It was the first time I felt courage since the day I met him. "You know what I'm going to do Mina? I'm going to kill his sorry a*s, and then you're next, you mother fu-" I couldn't take it anymore. I chucked the phone at my wall and watched it break in to various pieces. My knees hit the carpet and tears ran down my face. It was over. I had a feeling that things were going to get a lot better. The Schizophrenic Killer After recovering from a shoulder injury, Mina Green murdered officer Timothy Smith, by stabbing him in his sleep with the use of a kitchen knife. Recently, researchers have uncovered that motives for the homicide are related Green being born with the rare gene cannabis, combined with drug abuse. It has yet to be proven, but she may have developed a case of schizophrenia. After killing Smith, she strangled herself to death. Prior to the incident, Mina had a history of self inflicted injuries. Investigators have uncovered that the only thing Mina brought with her the night of the homicide were pieces of a broken phone which may have belonged to the late Danny Comfield. © 2011 Umbra-ReginaAuthor's Note
