A Mountain of meaning

A Mountain of meaning

A Poem by alex

A MOUNTAIN OF MEANING

A step

A crunch

A footfall

I listen to the gopher scream

an incomprehensible one-note song that monotonously and redundantly repeats itself

I grip my staff but shut my eyes

I listen

1400 meters above Poseidon

Gaiea whispers her tales

She blows a magnificent creature of color to the perch of my finger

Where it waits

Awaiting takeoff

Gathering my mind from the clutches of Hermes

I continue my quest the peace nature offers

My muscles on fire and my lungs coiled with rope, I carry my burden as stoicly as Atlas

Knowing

The amount of gold

Is measured by the distance the rainbow travels

Because you don’t see the rainbow

Until after the storm

At last!

I arrive in grandeur that would make Caesar jealous

But with the same amount of attention

With the eyes of Scout I assess my reward

Criteria fulfilled

With a 100% satisfaction guarantee

Memories of my Mango Street are erased from memory

As I lounge in my future grave

Death reminding me, no, demanding its presence to be known

But life still being deemed more valuable

The trillion blades of grass that must outnumber the atoms composing them

Each with an identity

Are a reminder that nature makes a stand

With dignity and respect

With beauty and heart

With a control on life that only animals and plants can comprehend

A philosophy that I follow deeply

Lao Tzu speaks freely

Hoping for future generations to take to heart

Not just to make them look smart:

“When you realize there is nothing lacking then the whole world belongs to you”
