Fear

Fear

A Poem by eli mercuree rue

We control our fear; fear resides in us.

To say we have a fear is to admit we have a fault.

For us to have a fault, then we must know we are broken.

If we know we are broken, then we know we are not perfect.

To know we are not perfect is to accept our unknowing mistakes.

By accepting our mistakes, we learn to prevent them, making us almost perfect.

Reaching a nearly perfect state lets us feel unbroken.

By feeling unbroken we feel not at fault.

Denying our fault we have nothing to fear.

We control our fear; fear is me.

I have nothing to fear but fear itself.

Since fear is me I can only fear myself.

I can fear no one unless they become me.

To break me is to make me; to make me is to be me;

But to be me is impossible for anyone except me.

Laugh, it's your free will; I have nothing to fear.

If I am able to break and repair myself before you can even enter my "force field,"

What type of person would I be if I let you get under my skin?

You are no match to the destructiveness I can inflict upon myself

And neither am I to that which you can do to yourself;

This sounds like something to fear to me.

We control our fear;

To fear myself, it becomes me,

           Except it's not me.

Theoretically, it's all very simple;
they might even draw you a diagram -
call it the 'Fear Tree' or something,
but if you follow it through precisely
the conclusion isn't always
uplifting, sometimes you end up drifting
alone, in poor company.

First time round
it all seems hokay
like this leads to this leads to this
but you get turned around
and go back the other way
and it turns out that the fireflies
you were chasing
were angry mob torches
and they're looking for YOU.

Everything comes back to yourself
which means you can rely on yourself
depend on yourself
and have no one but yourself
...so what happens if you turn out
not to be dependable?

"Laugh, it's your free will." - i like this line.

The whole piece treads carefully, like a magician stretching out his sleeve, to show you he's hiding nothing underneath it, but the whole time that lady in the bikini is dancing a sparkly come-on and you realise the whole thing's a load of s**t.

I think i dig the exact meaning of this one, but can't articulate it, which is frustrating.

Great last line too.
Give the kids something to think about.
Something else to cry about
like smacked bottoms with slippers
which revealed themselves
as football boots
with the steel studs.

Ouch.

I like it.

Wow, this drove me in circles... but I loved every minute of it. I liked how believable and rational it was, and I found myself nodding after every line. Good job!

Ha! Now this is an interesting one, that seems almost a Socratic path of self-analysis. Doubt, fear, they are to be overcome but they are of you -- a part of your essence. You can never escape yourself. To fear being too close to another, yet another fear. To be vulnerable, exposed -- perhaps for their knowledge of your Achille's tendon means they can do the most damage to you other than yourself. Yes, control it. It's okay to be hurt. You can't learn to walk unless you fall down. You can't learn to dance without twisting an ankle. Fly, be fearless. Cheers! Rob
