A Visit to Red Lake Reservation

A Visit to Red Lake Reservation

A Poem by UC Poika
"

A sonnet about a real trip to the outlet on lower Red lake on the Reservation.

"

Red Lake just between us meets up with the sky
Where the outlet streams by us running to the west
Staring at the sight of it a little guy
Looks at its bare bottom with avid interest
But with this Reservation a license is needed to fish
Because it isn't ours and we left it back home
But down in the First City we can if we wish
We think in the glare of the Bel Air's shiny chrome
Where the gulls glide high trying to get us to look
As they dive bomb our car there by the way
But letting go of their loads our windows field the gook,
A present from Nature best not delivered we say
Cherish the experience and getting in leave
Glad to have known the big lake even this way we believe.

Author's Note

UC Poika
Bemidji Minnesota is the first city on the Mississippi river and the Red lake Nation is a closed Indian (I don't like that term and prefer Native American) reservation.
