The rose

The rose

A Poem by Ryan Falzon - Tymon
"

Another poem similar to the fly.

"
A rose in a sea of weeds,
it dances in the wind,
ignorant of the deadly deeds,
 by those who have sinned.

The rose stands beautiful and tall,
pure, and full of pride.
The weeds look down in awe,
and attempt to hide.

The only one that can shine,
all of the others, all dull and grey.
Red as the finest wine,
the rose makes the others prey.

Under it's petals, a secret is found,
Showing that the rose has lied.
Stopping it from being proud.
That is where the thorns hide.

Similar to the fly, yet in the opposite way. The fly speaks of an ugly thing being beautiful, this poem speaks of a beautiful thing being ugly.

Sometime beauty can trick you. the thorns are there and we are too blind to see them. Poem is outstanding. Your use of words made this poem a pleasure to read. So many lines jumps at me. "Red as the finest wine, the rose make the others prey." A excellent poem.

@Tymon. I see what you're saying with 'prey'. I wanted to clarify that, as for me it takes the poem in a different direction. It shows not only is the rose an object of beauty that has something to hide, but that it has malicious side as well.

The reason I thought 'pray' might have been what you intended was because the second stanza shows the point of view of the weeds, and I thought the intent may have been that they wished to be like the rose, rather than them being the 'prey' of the rose.

thanks devons =) I always love your reviews they really help!

@R.Nella, no it's meant to be prey, as in the weeds are now the rose's prey. maybe i should add it's?

I like this. Everyone has an ugly side, no matter what they show to the world, or how the world around them perceives them.

One question though, in the third stanza, should 'prey' be 'pray''?

And vice versa. This is a subject close to my heart and soul. There are several ways in which it can interpreted, which -especially by its simple beauty- is always a positive thing in a poem.
To me, there are two main ways in which i would ingest this meaning...
1. That all beauty has a dark and dangerous potential - with all love there must be hate, with all beauty must be ugliness; each are only indentified by the others reflection upon it.
2. That this is a metaphor for superficiality. A thing might achieve beauty on the surface, whereas beneath it is ugly, or empty, or meaningless - this can be applied to many of the materialistic attitudes of today's culture. Or even lust, or even love.
This is very neatly presented, skilfully arranged, thought out and more profound than anyone can appreciate from its appearance and literal translation. Perhaps not unlike the rose itself...? It is a question of perspective - and maybe above all this is what this poem really explores.
