The Woes of a DragonslayerA Poem by Tyler SampsonThen the dragon with dark scales and fire red eyes, Condemns a village to its untimely demise. flames flow from it’s mouth like a waterfall of death decimating homes, and tearing lives asunder A man, brave and humble, stands before the dragon, hungry for adventure. Desperate to prove himself. The dragon shoots flames, once more, aiming for the man. The man deflects the dragon’s flames with his “Shield of the Forlorn” He lifts his gigantic sword above his head, and strikes the dragon, people begin to gather, watching the man fight the dreadful deathbringer. The battle rages on- The dragon, losing patience, does everything it can. The man counters every move attack. Embarrassing the dragon. The battle rage on still- The dragon charges for one final attack. The man sheaths his sword in the neck of the dragon, killing it. The man and the villagers gather at the pub. Cheers all around The dragon’s head on the wall, displayed above the booze The man feels love and praise he’s felt nowhere else before. Game Over: The screen flashes, rain pitterpatters on the roof above The refrigerator hums a low tone, The low yellow light sways above, with a lone moth trying to fight its way inside the bulb. The smell of stale cigarette smoke exudes from the sofa, ravaging the nostrils Week old take-out boxes litter the ground, some empty, others now on the floor. I set the controller down, take a breath, and head outside, back to the monotony of reality, an existence in obscurity. © 2015 Tyler Sampson |
