Barbed-Wire Around My HeartA Poem by James Mckaylyrics from a song I wroteThey say people who wear their heart on their sleeve Have a greater chance of getting hurt They say they're much easier to deceive Which lowers their self-esteem of worth I guess I need to strengthen my defenses And protect the love that I hold so dear It's like a cowboy mending fences So that nothing will disappear CHORUS: I guess I should put a little barbed-wire around my heart Maybe that will help me keep it from falling quickly apart Perhaps it will be a warning sign Saying back off, not this time Or take it slow and easy Before those sharp edges leave its mark I guess I should put a little barbed-wire around my heart It's not that I'm trying to prevent love from coming at all I'm just embracing for the possibility I'd rather be reduced to an even crawl Than begging there down on my knees I'm not someone you can use and toss aside Or to see how much you can get away with You've done crossed over that property line And now I will have to protect it REPEAT CHORUS That may sound a bit dramatic But it's the only solution But your heart will feel fantastic Once it rids all that pollution REPEAT CHORUS Perhaps it will be a warning sign Saying back off, not this time Or take it slow and easy Before those sharp edges leave its mark I guess I should put a little barbed-wire around my heart I should put a little barbed-wire around my heart! © 2023 James MckayReviews
