MASK

MASK

A Poem by James Mckay

MASK
Does it really hide your identity?
Are you the opposite of who you're trying to be?
Do you need to step back into reality?
Don't you know that it's ony make believe?

Don't you know it won't give you any super powers?
Does it give you confidence instead of being a coward?
Could you survive standing in a meteor shower?
Would you still be living or get fully devoured?

WIll it keep you safe from an airborne virus
Can you hear them saying, "You can't fight us!"
"No matter where you go, you can't hide from us"
I refuse to think that this pandemic will rewrite us

Which part do you cover? Which do you expose?
Is it only the eyes or is it the mouth and the nose?
Do you suffocate wearing it? Man, it truly blows
Honestly it cannot hide you from all your foes

Does it give you away or does it hide you well?
Do you constantly stumble? Will you surely prevail?
Are you a real hero or just something else?
Hopefully soon it'll collect dust on some shelf

Life is precious but it can be taken away so fast
Make every memory count as long as it lasts
So who am I? Is the question who ask?
I'm still the same person behind the mask!
