Sleepy Hollow : Foreverlast

Sleepy Hollow : Foreverlast

A Poem by Whitney
"

Has NOTHING to do with the movie. I wrote it to go with my painting. I advise you to look at the art to help understand the writing. http://fc00.deviantart.com/fs50/i/2009/279/2/7/Sleepy_Hollow___Foreverlast_by_AcidCryst.jpg

"

Relishing the tranquility of the Eden she tends,
She awaits her soul's perfect mate to return from afar.

Oblivious of the infernal being that conceals itself from her,
A slumber she falls into, to pass the unforgiving time.

Her beauty strikes a sense of malignance and excitement-
For the unearthly fiend that lies in wait for her.

And behind the serrated grin of such a beast,
Reveals a thief of souls and innocence.

While hovering over this sleeping beauty,
A darkened jewel is cradled within a mangled claw.

And with starvation in his eyes, his treasue is held to the skies;
To desperately soak up the sun's virgin rays.

It illuminates with multitudes of unknowing, stolen souls;
While her very soul is sucked from her body.

Descending from her head, she is engulfed in stone;
Hollowed out, to signify the beast's cursed existence.

When her love returns there will be no joyous tears,
Mold and dust is her form destined to accumulate for years to come.

This once love-struck maiden,
Has been transformed into a souless sleepy hollow.

Distraught and stripped of the beats of his heart-
He vows to lay with her until he releases his last breath.

And ablaze is the lantern that will never blow out,
Not until her soul is found, and put to rest peacefully.

This is a very nice example of Ekprasis and needs no apology for its form. Later, I'll get around to viewing the art work, but don't really need it to visualize the scene (isn't that what Ekphrasis is all about?). The only thing I had trouble with conceptually wss 'multitudes of stolen souls' since I imagined there were no souls before the ones in the Garden - where did the souls come from? Good work and good poetry.
