My Little Piece of Heaven

My Little Piece of Heaven

A Poem by Aislinn Gryffin ((Ashes))

We take long walks by the marsh or in the woods,

in last-year's shoes.

We eat off blue-and-white chinaware,

in the single-wide trailer we call "home."

We jump on our two trampolines carefully,

trying to avoid the many holes.

We spend a lot of time outdoors,

with no internet or cable to keep us inside.

We spend a week at Cocoa Beach every summer,

as long as the old truck doesn't break down.

We pick oranges and kumquats from the grove,

glad we know the owner and don't have to pay.

We're too proud to ask Maw-Maw for help,

so i switched out of private school my freshman year.

We live at the end of a road that bears our name,

and turns to mud and deep puddles every time it rains.

We don't have much compared to some,

but it's good enough for me.

We might be called poor or very close by some,

but we always manage to get by.

My home doesn't seem like much to everyone else,

but it's everything and more to me.

The woods and the marsh is where i'm from,

the boonies are what i know best.

Outside Smalltown USA and in the middle of nowhere,

i have my own little piece of Heaven on Earth.
