Mum & Dad

The story of my parents meeting. Trying out a new style of poetry, not sure i will stick with it!!

Rundown farm and whiskey bottles,

Told the story of dismay,

The young man who dwelt next door,

Tortured in his broken dreams he laid,

Alone but with his bourbon,

There alone and waiting for his day.

Neighbourly and curious she asked his name,

“Don’t you go there and bring us shame”

Her father’s words were harsh and stern,

There was a lesson in those words, but would she learn?

With a flask of Elder she took a wander,

Past piles of whiskey bottles left over yonder.

Wistful thoughts filled her mind,

Not thinking she might end up in a bind,

“Well Hello fair maiden” echo rolled,

She turned to face the most handsome soul,

Nervously she looked about not heeding the warning,

She offered Elder syrup and talked into morning.

Months of clandestine meetings concluded,

They no longer cared for the unaware and deluded,

The love that blossomed from the lonesome pair,

Reached into their souls and put paid to their cares,

They plotted they planned to understand,

How on earth they would escape this desolate land.

Clasped in each others hands they bounded the lane,

Glancing backward they saw the wrath that came,

Two barrels of her father’s gun,

Staring them down in anger and flame,

Eloping entangled in each others breath,

Four children went on to lay on their chests,

They remained united until together they passed,

But not before life had set them in their romantic cast.

Those romantic tests are tested by loyalty and time. Those magical moments are etched for eternity in hearts and souls. The fruits are those children of the love relationship. Thank you for sharing this story of your mum and dad...Splendid...:)
