August Pines

The first leaf

    of autumn…

(tiny, but still the first)

 lies on the roof

     outside the window.

It is heavier than the house it rests on.

This leaf is early,

    a month of summer

       still threatens me.

It is too late to do anything

                              now.

I have waited too long,

    wasted good time…

       …on bad ideas.

I don't know….

  I have never known,

                         I have forgotten,

and failed.

(and in doing so failed again to learn).

Autumn brings change;

              always has.
