Short Drabble

Short Drabble

A Story by Danny.P

I like to write short meaningless drabbles just to keep from getting writers block. Figured I'd just kinda put them here whenever I had one slightly worth saving, whether they are interesting or not.

The streets were never lonely in New York, to say the least. Even while walking late into the night you weren't alone, though more often than not you weren't in good company during these times. So far Jared had had little interaction with those out late into the night, but occasionally he'd be faced with some a*****e who felt the need to intrude on Jared's personal space and make him uncomfortable. It was normally okay though, and sometimes he even found himself enjoying those walks home. Not tonight though.

About three fourths of the way home he felt his body pulled violently to the ground. Before he even had the chance to push off the ground someone had pinned him down, someone smaller than him though. Without having to think about it much he realized he had a bulkier body type than whoever had him pinned down, so the force he exerted would most likely be stronger. So he pushed up, taking a brief look at his attacker. A young white male who didn't even look any older than 25.

When he pushed up he twisted his body so the attacker would be under him. But he didn't strike the man, he only stare at him for a moment. His attacker looked somewhat shocked with the turn of events. It then occurred to Jared that despite his bigger body type, he had appeared quite feminine that day. Between the makeup and the skirt he was wearing, he didn't exactly look like a girl, though he supposed he might seem like an easy target to someone who viewed viewed gay men, or even men who expressed femininity as weak. He consider this might be the reason he was targeted...or maybe the man was just stupid and thought he could take on someone with more body mass. Either way Jared didn't want a fight.

After a few short moments Jared got up and immediately ran, not thinking of calling the authorities or even hitting the guy. Though after a few minutes of running he finally stopped to check if the man had taken anything. And of course his phone was gone. God damn it, he should of checked when he turned the guy over. He must of not of got to his wallet before Jared was able turn things around on the attacker. He sighed heavily, and decided the man was probably gone now. With this thought he headed home, tired and frustrated.

When he finally returned home, he kicked off his shoes and looked around his apartment, searching for some signs of life. Both his children seem to be asleep though. Most nights he dare not leave them at the apartment alone, but the old woman next store promised him she'd keep checking in on them throughout the night, bless her soul. Jared made his way towards the main bedroom, pulling off his shirt once he entered. He threw it into the hamper before moving to pull of his skirt as well, changing into his comfortable sweats after. Then he moved to the restroom to remove his makeup.

After his nightly routine he went to check on his children in bed. He hadn't even bothered to look at the clock yet, no wonder they were asleep. It was already two in the morning. He sighed when he looked at the clock, and then opened the door to his children's room slowly. He peeked in to both seemingly asleep. With a small smile on his face he began to shut the door, when a small voice emerged from under the covers.

"Daddy?" The three year old spoke, though in Mandarin, unable to speak much English without having to think about it for extended periods of time. The child's father sighed a little, and looked back in.       "Yes, baby?" he addressed her in English, having wanted her to start speaking it more. Though he understood it was hard for her, and wouldn't try to make her speak full sentences in English when sometimes she couldn't even do it in Mandarin.
"...Can I come sleep with you?" she said, in somewhat slurred Mandarin, obviously very tired.
"Of course, sweetheart. You really should of been asleep a long time ago though. Be careful not to wake your brother." This time he also spoke in Mandarin with the knowledge that his daughter would not understand all of that in English. With his answer the little girl slowly crawled out of the bed, holding a little blanket with a cute bear imprinted on it. She waddled over to her father, and he picked her up off the floor.

The two fell asleep soon after cuddling up under the blankets in Jared's bed, Jared somewhat content now, even after the days earlier and unfortunate events.

If you do review this, though I doubt you will, I'd mostly want you to focus on how its written rather than the characters or dialogue. Such as grammar issues, or things I could of worded better. Any advice on that.
