Chapter 1A Chapter by ToriSchrodiThis is the shortest chapter there will be, it sets up Verna's home life and how she uses her magic in her everyday life.Chapter 1 I paced my room in annoyance, “You’re supposed to give me a week's notice before calling me out to a sight so that I can change any plans I have Mo.” I said in irritation, I turned to my crystal ball and glared at the shimmering image of Mo. “I know but we did expect there to be such a powerful artifact here. We thought one of us would be able to handle it. But Verna this artifact is like nothing we’ve ever seen before you gotta get out here.” Mo insisted. “Cruses,” I muttered rubbing the bridge of my nose, “You realize I’m still in High School and I’ve got tests this week?” Mo sighed, “Yes yes I know, but this is important!” I growled, “You said Athens?” Mo nodded vigorously his blonde hair falling into his eyes, “Yes Athens, Greece.” “You need to get a haircut Mo.” He waved his hand dismissively, “I’ll get it when I have time. I’ll see you soon!” And the crystal ball blinked off. Mo is my best friend in the magical world, he’s an archaeologist that travels with humans so that if any humans happen to stumble upon a magical artifact he can use magic to hide it from their eyes. We met at a burial site in Egypt when he almost caused a large cavern that would’ve trapped 20 human scientists. I sighed and held out my hand, and my staff came flying from its stand in the corner, the amethyst crystal glowing brightly. “Alright gotta pack a bag…” I pointed my staff at the closest and made a sweeping motion, the closet flew open and a bag came flying out and landed on my bed, I flicked the staff in the direction of the dresser and clothing started flying around the room, “Let’s see here…” I pointed at the items I wanted to pack, they folded themselves neatly and placed themselves in my duffel bag. I flicked my staff and the remainder of the clothing quickly went back into my dresser. “Mom!” I yelled. “Quit yelling and come into the kitchen if you want to talk to me!” She yelled in annoyance. I groaned and walked into the kitchen, “Ma I gotta go to Greece.” She turned around her arms crossed in front of her chest, “I thought you got a week’s notice before you had to go scampering off to some ancient site.” She pointed out. My mother knew about my second life. She kind of had too considering that I would disappear for days at a time. “Yeah I know, but apparently this is an emergency.” I said leaning against the counter. “You can’t leave till you clean the upstairs.” I rolled my eyes and waved my staff, the vacuum slid out of the closet and the duster came flying out immediately going to work, “There, they’ll put themselves away when their done. Now I gotta go.” “You aren’t supposed to use magic to do your chores Verna!” My mother scolded as I walked away. I turned with my arms out wide, “What’s the point of being the most powerful sorceress in the country if I can’t do my chores with magic?” I twirled my staff and my sorceresses robe flew out of the closet and landed gracefully around my shoulders the fabric shimmering in the light. “I’ll see you in a few days ma!” My bag flew to my side, I put my staff in two hands and swirled the staff in a circle a dark purple line trailing the stone, “Portal Open! Athens Greece!” a large purple hole opened in the middle of the kitchen on the other side you could see the city of Athens shimmering in the distance. “Bring me back a nice scarf honey,” My mom said. “Okay ma,” I said with a laugh, “Tell dad I said see ya later,” I said with a smile. And I stepped through the portal. © 2016 ToriSchrodiAuthor's Note
