A Poem by Tony Noon

What will you say on that day

When the fans are all hit,

When pigeons come home

to roost in cold structures.

What will you say on that day

When the chips are down,

When there are only brick walls

Ahead and no diversions.

On that day what will you say

When they ask you why,

When your resume doesn’t

Tell them where you’re at.

I can see this question being directed at two different kind of people. One who has always gotten by somehow but no one can really explain how because it isn’t through effort and the other who has tried really hard but maybe didn’t make very good choices. I personally would almost rather it be the first, because it’s easy to say they should have to struggle to answer such a question. It’s a challenging question no matter what the circumstances that lead you to it are. How do you answer when it makes perfect sense to you and is going to be completely incomprehensible to anyone else?
I’m still searching for that answer myself, usually I just try to say enough words so that the people asking forget what question they asked in the first place.
