The majority of people have spoken and their concerns need to be addressed. Whether total independence or more autonomy. They feel they are different people and they have been wronged and taken by force in the 20th. century. I hope they can solve it peacefully. An excellent and concise poem, sir Tony.

My maternal great-grandfather's Spanish blood trickles amid the flow of my blood, Tony. But, apart from that, when people speak with their hearts and act upon their given rights to stand tall.. they deserve what they've voted for.

I am torn in the assumption though that majority of people should get what they want - for me there has to be a historic reckoning as it is here in Northern Ireland.
For example I can sympathise with the Spanish because they are seeing their wonderful country divided but the Catalans (and hopefully the Basques) will see their historic destiny fulfilled.
Now if the same scenario is translated to Northern Ireland - then who is to say that the 300 years of Protestant rule isnt historic enough for that section of our population to secede a part of old Ireland forever, (Counties Antrim - where I live, and County Down probably) as an independent Orange state.
So I can see both sides of this coin and yet my heart is with the Catalans.

As a believer, C of E born of RC mother and agnostic father i can, hand on heart say that religion has much to answer for. History's battles have been lost and won by more cassocks than armour, Plus tis more than hard to keep the necessary balance when looking to the Creator and praying for Help when weeping inside wondering where He's gone. Oops, i rant softly - yet again.

Catalans and the Irish have long had a spiritual and cultural connection Annette.
Our walls are adorned with murals of their plight and many of our homes and shops are bedecked with their flags.
We are all praying here that it can be a peaceful transition.

Positively channeled, Nationalism can be a force for good - centuries of oppression lifted - as it was in the U.S. - or it can be used wrongly as a means of revenge on the oppressor.
Bobby Sands wrote "Our revenge will be the laughter of our children." - that should be re-balancing of the scales enough.

I hear you John. Tis a crown jewel. I suspect a compromise like the Irish 'Independence' - remain part of a Spanish commonweath perhaps (with 'wealth' being the operative word).
I pray the violence is over.
