My finest hour !

My finest hour !

A Poem by Tom
"

One of those precious memories...

"

It's with fondest regards,

I return to heady days and a game,
played between 22 yards
on a green and pleasant field

First in my refer, a cup final
an innings of flare,
like King Arthur with Excalibur,
my bat, I did courageously wield.

On a crusade of pillage and plunder,
each bowler, I took savagely asunder
as against me their resolve,

did totally yield.

Then later in scenes of tumult and rapture
I rose up my arduous capture,
of that much coveted,

silver shield!

Or from a recess in mind,
thoughts aplenty, return in kind
of a victory, from the jaw of defeat
I managed to snatch

Not one to bury my head in the sand
Like an ostrich, who can't understand?
with our team in dire need, I bowled at great speed
taking matters firmly in hand

First, I snaffled a return catch,
then clean bowled the last three in a batch
to win a most enthralling, engaging
and highly unlikely, cricket match!

Now long in this bliss, could I reminisce
in memories, of nostalgia and fun
but my finest hour, the greatest by far
and it mattered not, if we lost or we won!

Such feelings of elation,
mixed with joy and sensation
the emotion I felt, caused my heart to melt,
more so, than anything else I've ever done!

Was just yesterday,

when I walked onto the field to play,
a game of cricket, for the first time,

as a proud father, together with my Son!

You have paved the way well for your terrific ending, Tom. Showing your son the ropes of the game you love must have been the greatest thrill of your life. And watching him play, a source of your greatest pride. Being a parent is the most wonderful coaching experience there is. Thanks for such a heart warming poem.

Thank you Onku, I'm a cricket junkie ! lol
When we rise to the challenge and display our mettle... how much more grand can it be than when we share it with family. The poem gave life to your emotions... and the emotions held the memory clear and close.

Thanks again J.
Cricket! How men of all ages adore the game and remember the first time they faced a bowler - howzat! Your words, the style of them, have almost converted the game into a tournament, a game between them and them, when the batting team was vanquished and the others claimed their laurels!

A fun metered stanza: ' First, I snaffled a return catch, ~ then clean bowled the last three in a batch ~ To win a most enthralling, engaging ~ And highly unlikely, cricket match! '

Love the ending - has an amen to it.

So am I but I still enjoy it! Thanks Doc!
As the "teachers" in their lives, we must remind ourselves how incessantly they absorb things...the bad as well as the good. Memories like this are the ones we hope will imbue, like oatmeal on a wintry morning.

Much enjoyed this, Tom!

Thank you for the amazing poem. Time with son are best days in a life. I like the description. You made me want to know the rules of the game cricket.

Thank you Coyote, I'll explain them to you with pleasure if you have a few weeks to spare ! lol
Wonderful nostalgia in this poem. The imagery was splendid and the rhyming pure perfection. It's wonderful you can teach your son the ins and outs of a sport you so loved as a a young man. Of course, the reminiscing is a bit poignant, but still wonderful. Just think, some day he will teach your grandson the game! Lydi**

Thanks Lydia, indeed you speak a pertinent fact, although someway to go yet !
You brought forth the images and deep emotions that are connected with sports. The commonality of games draws families together.
