Closing Time

Closing Time

A Poem by Tomi

War, that time has come

A man from every door

Closing time is near

There’s trouble everywhere

She Hugs and says goodbye

Never seen him cry

They swear they’ll always be

In this life and the next

He puts on the Green Uniform

A cap and black boots

The Russians are coming the English are coming

He shoots, his brothers in arms too

Friendly fire, deadly fire, they die, they burn

A bullet catches one knee: a mine takes the other

He bleeds. he limps, he cries

He looks at the skies and says a prayer

“Dear Lord please keep Lisa safe”

As the earth fades out, keep mama safe: he whispers

He kept a promise he made his mother

She said: Remember to pray when closing time is near

He fades gently into oblivion

Lisa has no one

Shadows, Spirits, weeping

She bears him a Son

whoa... speechless, so heavy and so much death... how we make life into wars and send men to face such horror, because they are men and they are brave and they can sacrifice their lives for us... I don't think it's a fair expectation.. I think there is too much manipulation, propaganda in creating these expectations and traditions.. yes men fight for food for survival, but we are creating these situations of extreme conflict that is unnecessary... then I think it's unnecessary to sacrifice so many lives.

Thank you! i couldn't agree more
War leave no winners. Only people with sadness. Your story in the poem is common for many places in our world today. People died to protect home and family. I pray your friend does okay. Hard to raise children alone. Thank you for sharing the sad poem.

Good poem with a strong story - I admire soldiers as persons, but would be happy
to see a world without war and conflicts.

Having a brother currently in the war, they certainly are. For reasons, I dont think I'll ever understand. A profound, well written write. Nicely done.

May He rest in Peace:Your Uncle...Thank you for reviewing this
you seem to have said it all here..and said it very eloquently....Bravery comes in many forms....But to face death knowingly takes a special resolve
