Crystabel and Elf - Part 8A Poem by Tom BensonA new threat arrives perhaps ...
Every fairy recognised, how special Elfmac was. Not one of them surprised, he never seemed to pause.
Spending time with everyone, taught spells they'd never known. He made the learning fun, in the way that it was shown.
Manipulating plants, controlling water too. Using quiet rhythmic chants, he'd show them what to do.
'Occasionally ah'll threaten, an adversary you'll see, nae need tae fight ah'm bettin', if yer magic's good ye' see.'
'The Black Sprites were a case, misguided their attack. I put them in their place, you're prepared should they come back.'
'Before ah' leave your wood, ma' journey north beginnin', ah'll train ye tae be good, at tacklin' foes an' winnin'.'
In small groups Elf would teach, the lads and lasses too. Every fairy he would reach, and they numbered quite a few.
The boys were never bored, always interest in their eyes. By girls Elf was adored, he was tickled by their sighs.
Whilst Crystabel looked on, with not a selfish thought. She saw friendliness heaped on, the handsome little Scot.
One day right overhead, a flock of birds appeared. Not flying straight ahead, but to forest floor they neared.
Right into the wood, landing on the riverside. Was their visit bad or good? Fairies didn't try to hide.
'Don't worry, stand by me!' said Elf, the fearless Scot. 'Use the lessons taught by me, show the courage that you've got.'
The birds began to settle, looking at the creatures. Prepared to show their mettle, judging by their features.
Each bird stood up and moved, it's wings but only lightly. Fairies stayed and proved, new courage to Elf rightly.
