Pete and MarieA Poem by Tom BensonSome people change, some don't ...
Pete resumed his seat, and gazed straight at her face. Strange they'd finally meet, right here in his workplace.

Twenty years before, they'd been in the same class. Marie's looks he'd adore, each time the pair would pass.
Back then, when as a teen, Marie developed fast. Looks like a beauty queen, but boyfriends didn't last.
Pete once took his chance, he may as well, he figured. She spurned him at the dance, shook her head and sniggered.

When school was left behind, they went their separate ways. Pete knowing he would find, a good career that pays.
He studied hard and grew, into a handsome guy. Successful he was too, through the ranks he'd fly.

Marie enjoyed her looks, and married into money. She had no need of books, her life was rich and sunny.
An older man with cash, she married when just twenty. Thinking he would splash, gifts upon her plenty.
It wasn't how things went, Marie then formed a plan. A little time was spent, to find another man.

Back up to date, now seated, Pete lifted up some papers. 'Marie,' he softly greeted, 'I've been following your capers.'
'You're such a stunning lady, I remember you when younger. Your past's a little shady, you have a certain hunger …'
'Six marriages you've had, insurance made you rich. Not one husband bad, but you remained a b***h.'
'My investigations show, each husband you had killed. Then off once more you'd go, with your plan fulfilled.'
'Changing names just might, hide you for a while. But you're such a stunning sight, and you live in style.'
'You've lived in different states, whilst covering your past. For you now justice waits, we've captured you at last.'
'You're going to a place, where you're life will end. No jewellery, no lace, no cash for you to spend.'
Pete finished off his speech, then he closed the books. He glanced down at the leech, still with her gorgeous looks.
Off went the great detective, hard cases, Pete was given. His bosses were selective, they knew it was his livin'.
Pete's work some would applaud, his service and protection. Marie would meet her God, because of flawed perfection.
