The Enemy Within

The Enemy Within

A Poem by Tom Benson
"

A war isn't always fought by recognised armies.

"

Armed Forces go to war,

to fight their country's foes.

It's what they're all trained for,

deterrent they should pose.

An outside force attacks,

attempting to invade.

Bad battle plan leaves cracks,

at home they should have stayed.

Worst fight is from within,

no borders have been crossed.

Insurgents hope to win,

their cause at any cost.

No massive show of force,

no air-strikes and no tanks.

Scattered pockets used of course,

punching holes in main force flanks.

The convoys will be large,

it's the nature of the beast.

Hit by explosive charge,

rebel risk is at the least.

Occasionally a shot,

a sniper makes his mark.

Until the guy is caught,

patrols are in the dark.

Too many now to name,

countries in these fights.

Unrest begins … they blame,

a lack of human rights.

So then the stage is set,

distrust and mayhem rule.

Both sides now blood will let,

for innocents it's cruel.

Every age takes part,

both women and their men.

Their cause felt in the heart,

lives risked time and again.

One man's Terrorist …

is another man's Freedom Fighter …
