Which Witch is Which? - Sequel

Which Witch is Which? - Sequel

A Poem by Tom Benson
"

A young lady who discovered her immortality in the 17th century.

"

You may recall my tale,

about a lovely lady.

Her potions didn't fail,

but townsfolk thought her 'shady'.

They burned her in a fire,

tied to a wooden stake.

Cheers rose as flames went higher,

it was a grave mistake ….

For years Kate saved their sick,

be they poor or rich.

But they tied her to a stick,

and branded Kate a witch.

As the bonfire cleared,

no more smoke or flame.

Behind the crowd appeared,

a girl that looked the same.

She found a nearby wood,

and lived amongst the trees.

And though her heart was good,

Kate now ignored their pleas.

A fresh disease was felt,

in the local town.

Kate watched their numbers melt,

in their tears they'd drown.

Kate wandered off alone,

searching for a place.

Where kindness might be shown,

and no-one knew her face.

For many years she stayed,

and quietly cast spells.

Whilst other people prayed,

or threw coins into wells.

Kate died but was reborn,

immortal it would seem.

At first a thought she'd scorn,

thinking it a dream.

She never loved a man,

knowing she'd live on ….

'I'll know it when I can,

once this curse has gone.

With each resurrection,

no other name she'd rate.

'I like my first selection,

I'm happy to be Kate.'

Four centuries went by,

Kate born again, a beauty.

'Please lift this spell!' she'd cry,

'I feel I've done my duty ….'

One day near but not above,

so close it made Kate wince.

'Okay, you've done enough,

go off and find your prince ….'

Tom,
What a great way to paint the lady who's now the only girl for His Majesty, the Prince. Portraying the lady as not only human, but quasi-ultra-human in her divined abilities, and despite the veiled threats of the people, she went on to find her destiny, her superman in shining armor.
Great structure an rhyme, my friend. Long live the Queen.

Cheers mate! BZ

Oh the many grevious tales of the 'witches' as they were called and how badly they were tortured and misunderstood.
I prefer to call them "The ladies of the Unknown", who practice 'Wicca, Celtic Druidism, White Magic, the belief in the spirit of all things, fundamentally spiritual nature of life, with Gods and Goddesses.
You have captured the essence of the infamous, historical history of Salem, Mass. and their witchcraft hysteria. Sad yet true
