Survival 4 - Aquatic

Survival 4 - Aquatic

A Poem by Tom Benson
"

Nature is thought by many to have started here and despite man's best efforts it still seems to beat the odds.

"

Half of our world is water,

be it river, lake or ocean.

Consider it...we oughta,

we all should take the notion.

It came to me whilst thinking,

the thrills that man can share.

In a two man sub, deep sinking,

to check out what's down there.

The darkness of the deep,

has secrets still to tell.

Of things that swim or creep,

no need for sight or smell.

Those tumbled down remains,

of shipwrecks way down there.

Provide home that sustains,

for creatures who all share.

For protection some fish 'shoal',

and swim around as one.

A longer life their goal,

in togetherness it's won.

Fish never feel the chill,

of winter's breath below.

As species feed and kill,

and move on with the flow...

All Sharks of different type,

adapt to each condition.

If you listen to the hype,

get close...a deadly mission.

Octopus and Squid,

with tentacles extended.

Through water make their bid,

keep territory defended.

Underwater holds extremes,

Hump-back Whale to Seahorse cute.

Then in rivers and in streams,

we see Salmon, Frog and Newt.

Microscopic types of creature,

like the Coral will combine.

To provide a living feature,

where many tiny fish live fine.

Lovely Angel Fish to Sea snakes,

from Sponge to Killer Whale.

Each species does what it takes,

to ensure their kind don't fail.

To each environment comes Man,

his ambitious needs fulfilling.

Always doing what he can,

by destroying, catching, killing...

I aim to entertain with my natural history poetry but if it educates then I'm pleased. I've completed this series with a chilling but honest appraisal of the greatest threat on the planet.

I really enjoyed this piece, it was so beautiful, they way you describe the ocean and its creatures. Not just as a whole, but also as individual components which make up the big swirly blue yonder.
I found the ending to be the most interesting, after all that beauty, to be introduced to something so harsh and horrifying in its own way. Humans really do destroy the natural beauty of this world.
(Sorry for ranting)
