Once Upon a Lunchtime ...

Once Upon a Lunchtime ...

A Poem by Tom Benson
"

When I started writing poetry

"

'Twas 2007 … late,

I first attempted rhyme.

I thought, I might 'create',

a verse in my lunchtime.

A colleague saw me write,

young lady just gone twenty.

She said, 'That looks alright,

I take it you've done plenty …'

'No' I told my friend,

'verse writing I've left late.'

She said, 'When verse I've penned,

I'm signed Devilzadvocate.'

She told me of the place,

Starlite her work was shown.

'Post there and show your face,

choose a name by which you're known.'

Not nervous, more excited,

I tried my hand at rhyme.

I was totally delighted,

making friends in rapid time.

Writing simple things at first,

on topics I knew well.

Friendly comments gave a thirst,

a story I could tell.

At challenges I tried,

and even got a win.

My mind I then applied,

a series I would spin.

My confidence grew fast,

as more and more I wrote.

Writing from my past,

and ideas I would float.

Short stories are the top,

of my writing tree.

My ideas never stop,

I'm inspired constantly.

Now I have a blog,

where all my writing's seen.

No mistiness, no fog,

it's laid out neat and clean.

Twitter, Facebook and Yahoo,

I'm listed on them all.

So many things to do,

my task list isn't small.

One idea I decided,

trying with my writing.

Verse and prose should be divided,

to keep them both exciting.

Then something came to me,

I thought I'd give a burst.

For a storyline I'd seek …

to write a poem of it first …

I've improved my storytelling,

I would like to think.

Keeping plots compelling,

action always on the brink.

So since I've posted here,

forms I've tried o'er time.

To me it's pretty clear,

I like my verse in rhyme.

Short stories I'll still write,

because they mean so much.

But verse can still excite,

ballads, yenga, free and such …

Author's Note

Tom Benson
A true tale about how recently I took up writing poetry.
I was already dabbling in short stories, but they weren't too good and I had started a novel ... which seemed a good idea at the time.

I loved this tale Tom and it is one I know well. I just started writing myself in Nov of 2009 and it has become a great love of mine. You are a wonderful storyteller, I wish I could move on to that place myself. Well done!
