Schiphol Airport

Schiphol Airport

A Poem by Tom Benson
"

Having just returned from a weekend in Amsterdam ...

"

To fly in is a pleasure,

some sights seen from the plane.

This airport is a treasure,

it's anything but plain.

From the sky, canals you see,

windmills, barges too.

KLM flights … majority,

their tail-planes painted blue.

All terminals far away,

you travel there by bus.

Care taken, arrive okay,

nothing's too much fuss.

Gateway to Amsterdam

from anywhere you like.

From there by train or tram

or hire yourself a bike …

Let's look closer at the place,

at all that's going on.

Life's lived at breakneck pace,

it's for real, it's not a con.

Baggage is collected,

passport control is next.

By customs not selected,

you walk on through perplexed.

Children running, screaming,

along the many aisles.

Concourses simply teeming,

with stewardesses smiles.

Restaurants and many shops,

it's more like a mini town.

With armed but friendly cops,

patrolling all around.

Jewellery and toys,

clothes and shoes on sale.

PA system, constant noise,

it seems to just prevail.

Departures and arrival,

are constant you can see.

Timetables mean survival,

of how it's meant to be.

So many tongues are spoken,

by the friendly staff.

It's more than just a token,

they'll even share a laugh.

Easy followed signs,

lead travellers around.

Efficiency just shines,

in sights and also sound.

A welcome you will find,

in this very busy place.

The staff polite and kind,

it's written on each face.

What a great tribute to that airport, you ought to send it to its Publicity Dept .. really, it's both complimentary and delightful. Apart from the content, there's such fine meter to your poem,

'Children running, screaming, ~ along the many aisles. ~ Concourses simply teeming, ~ with stewardesses smiles.

Restaurants and many shops, ~ it's more like a mini town. ~ With armed but friendly cops, ~ patrolling all around.'
