When They Stood There For That Photo

When They Stood There For That Photo

A Poem by Tomás Ó Cárthaigh
"

Poem pondering the thoughts of my grandfather, greatgrandfather and servents as their picture was taken by Sean Mac Eoin - them plain John Joseph Mc Keown - wo went on to be president.

"

When they stood there, for that photo
Before my father was even born then
Who is now but in a picture a face
Did those women and men
Wonder at the world to come
And ponder the coming times of change
Though they did not do this I think
For their own times were as strange
To have their day and to have it good
I think they were content
As they stood to have their picture taken
By a future war hero and candidate for President!

This is a lovely little piece of work. And through a very simple story goes on to give a profound message. The style is rather naive, almost child-like, a casual innocent way of saying things. Yet, it speaks of the hidden roots of glory and greatness that stare people in the face and are still missed. An intelligent write!

A picture may say a lot but I like what you say here about this picture. Sometimes we do not realize what we experience in one moment will be or mean something more at another moment.

Ah Tom I'll say they took a minute maybe two in their lives to wonder this far ahead. I'll guarantee they spent more time trying to satisfy past generations. I know we do.

There is such a drifting, reflective grace to your words. The ponderings of yesterday.. dreams of today.. To wonder what may have come of their thoughts in that moment, and ours now. So insightful and moving.

Not just your poetic words, but also the music and photo contribute to a unique and entertaining look into history and your kin's place in it. Thank you.
