I Was the Reluctant Lover

I Was the Reluctant Lover

A Poem by Tomás Ó Cárthaigh
"

Valentines poem about a girl I adored that I worked with but never had the guts to ask out! Faint heart, it is true, wins not the fair lady...

"

I was the reluctant lover
She was a Goddess divine
I was not as brave as a man should be
And so her heart was never mine

Oh, am I the fool of legend
Am I the only one
Who loved and lost as I never tossed
My hat in the ring till the girl was gone?

And as I look at the picture
Her face and smile come to mind
May we always find a beautiful memory of another
Though we may never meet another of their kind.

I was that hunter with his dogs
Who left the lady sitting naked and alone
To hunt for all the vanities of life
And lost the lady he desired as his own.

A hunter hunts for glory and alone
And relishes the company of his hound
But the greatest hunt is of the heart
And for me will the quarry ever be found?

Should she again come into my range
Then with arrows and hounds I shall descend
And stop the hunt, and run the hounds
And maybe for me be a happy end?

I'm sure that you're not the only one who has lacked the front to approach one who is fascinating to us, and have thus lost the opportunity to discover whether she is the one, or not. Nicely read in your Irish brogue.
(But seriously, if you really did leave her naked and alone - what the hell were you thinking of, man??? )

I love your readings! I feel that your work would not be the same if another read in your stead. I'm glad that you have slowed your speech, this makes your poems carry more weight. As for the work itself, I was pained. I too have felt that burning for another who would never be mine. The pain and emotion that you've offered is wonderful. Thank you for sharing.

perhaps she will come again, perhaps your muse will have a fairer face, perhaps you will doubt your way again

but just perhaps everything will work out well
and you shall have your happy end

Very beautifully written - reminded me of Longfellow. The narration was a nice touch - it is not too often we get to hear the work read by the author! Thought-provoking, adding a whole new meaning to the Titan image. Very nice!

well, this had it's sad beauty and I loved this. Your best poem, dear friend.
I liked the concept of telling a story and not closing the circle.

Also using the media -video, sound of music and voice I liked...

thx for your comment on my poem.

This is beautiful! Sad, but a lesson well learned as most learned the hard way tend to be. Hindsight is 20/20 and it is often through reflection on missed opportunities that we gain the courage to reach out the next time. I really enjoyed this poem. So glad you posted the words as you narrated it because I am over 85% deaf and have no clarity of hearing. It was wonderful to listen to the voice and be able to read along too.
